Still waiting for BSU's next play-by-play announcer

Random Wednesday thoughts while waiting for the Fresno State-Georgia College World Series final.

Fresno State's success makes it seem a bit odd that Boise State does not have a baseball team. Fresno State athletic director Thomas Boeh said the program costs roughly $1.5 million per year. Just think of the exposure the Bulldogs have gotten in the last few weeks.

Worth well over $1.5 million.

And please don't talk about the weather. The College of Idaho manages to field a successful baseball team. And last time I checked the weather in Caldwell isn't much different than the weather in Boise.

Boise State's main reason not to add baseball isn't really the money or the weather, but the Title IX implications. Simply no getting around that.

• Peak Broadcasting senior vice president Kevin Godwin told me last week that his company would decide on a Boise State play-by-play announcer by Friday. That would have been last Friday, June 21.

Today is June 25 — and still no replacement for Paul J.

Godwin said Peak, which won the broadcast rights this spring over long-time rights holder Citadel, had narrowed its search down to four finalists. One apparent finalist has accepted a job at Virginia.

One down, three to go.

Peak is in a difficult position, no doubt. Simply figuring out how to structure a contract for the new play-by-play announcer is tricky, especially if Peak is now down to its No. 2 choice.

Add in the perception — fair or unfair — that it looks like Boise State was in the "anybody but Paul J" camp, and Peak is already facing an uphill battle to sell its choice to the masses.

A delay like this doesn't help.

Baseball/Wrestling

It's a simple choice. Trade wrestling for baseball. Most of the PAC-10 schools have abandoned wrestling. Why not BSU too?

We have national caliber wrestlers that have fine opponents...

that's rather short sided.

Also lacking is the notion that Title IX rules might put a kink in it as demoting a women's sport in equality and funding and operations.

It isn't that easy necessarily.

Fine opponents?

There are only 2 Pac-10 wrestling teams left in the conference.. If the Pac-10 abandons the wresting conference (they will be discussing this in September I believe) then do we get to sit down and have a serious conversation about doing the previously mentioned? Replace wrestling with a sport that brings in more revenues? Big problem though is the start up costs (Build a complex or use Memorial Stadium??) and the lack of money for that. If we had that kind of money we'd be closing Bronco Stadiums South Endzone and puttting in corners in the North.

Baseball?

Yawn. Didn't the Olympics do away with baseball or was it softball? The wrestling program is top notch, and those kids work hard in the class and never get in trouble with the law. That's a lousy idea!

Touch "Em All

If Peak Broadcasting continues misleading the public the way they have in this situation, people will demand a change back to Citadel and Paul J. before the two year contract expires. Peak really needs to start hitting some base hits instead of mouthing off and striking out or the community will cry foul and hit them right out of the ballpark.

Peak isn't "mis-leading"

Please read the article about Virginia "poaching" what must have been Peak's top candidate on fightfightbsu.blogspot.com

I'd want them to regroup after that and take their time. Pigs will be flying and possibly killing themselves diving into the blue before you see people calling for Paul J to come back! I think we were all frustrated with how he was let go but it was his time to go.

THE ANSWER IS...

They will use the automatic voicetracking they employ at their stations!

Here's Johnny Hates Jazz going up the right, Cutting Crew past Tears For Fears and finally tackled by Barbra Streisand at the 3 Dog Night line. Could This Be Magic or an Instant Replay?

Black Flag on the Coldplay...looks like the Nickelback, Willie Nelson...The Broncos all seem to say Looks Like We Made It but the official says I Can't Go For That...No Can Do!

You not very smart...

Umm.. They employ very little voice tracking... So, get off of your voice tracking horse... It isn't true. Maybe the "corporate radio" stations use a lot of voice tracking, but certainly not Peak.

Technically, you are correct...

It's "backtracking" and it's done with a computer, not humans.

What I heard on the radio blog.

PS "This is KCIX, bringing disco back to Garden City"...

Basically the occasional tease used during the testing phase prior to K-106/Mix 106's full sign-on about 23 years ago.

I've been a rabid radio and TV fan since about the age of 4 in 1970 and it was all Treasure Valley radio I paid attention to. You can knock my knowledge of a lot of things BUT NOT THIS.
