A little Monday morning reading
Submitted by Kevin Richert on Mon, 05/19/2008 - 10:15am.
Little bit of quick reading for a Monday morning, eight days pre-primary:
• Over in Nampa, the Idaho Press-Tribune endorsed Sunday in the race for Canyon County prosecutor and sheriff. They too picked John Bujak for prosecutor and incumbent Chris Smith for sheriff. Read their endorsements here.
• Want to know more about a Democrat endorsing 1st Congressional District Rep. Bill Sali — allowing the campaign to note Sali has bipartisan support for a second term? Click here.
• Want to catch up on guest opinions from candidates and officeholders? Click here. And bookmark the site, as we will continue adding guest opinions and rebuttals throughout the week.
And a quick look-ahead to the Opinion page. We'll wrap up endorsements for the spring with our 1st Congressional District editorial Tuesday. We'll weigh in Wednesday on the new (and already heated) race between House Majority Leader Mike Moyle, R-Star, and former Eagle mayor Nancy Merrill.

The Spokesman Review
requires a paid subscription. Could we see a fair-use portion?
It's just Betsy's thing anyway.
They didn't endorse SUNDAY at IPT, they endorsed CANDIDATES.
We do get tired of subscribing to a million things for potentially trivial reasons. Forums and blogs are understandable but not having to log in to watch the news and it's really not worth it to provide "demographics" to see content or save 15 cents at the grocery store. I just look elsewhere and buy 3x as much at a discounter.
Low-Class Econ 101: pride & stubbornness before practicality
As a 'Roosevelt Republican' (Teddy Roosevelt) it greatly pains me to say this...but Idaho HAD BETTER start electing some Democrats to national office. No better place to start than with Minnick and LaRocco.
Doing my electoral handicapping over the weekend....the GOP is toast (big-time!), and unless Idaho voters start playing both sides of the street, we'll be toast as well. Just having a low-wage, high-tax state (unless you're a welfare-farmer-legislator) won't be near enough to keep us afloat.
Or we could support urban guerilla movements globally.
Seems like there's always a need for all that.
Yep.
WildBill; you may be right; then maybe all the folk from
CA will have to leave ID and we will have a nice state again. Just a few rich ranchers like JR. Then we could drive down Fairview Ave. on a Sat. without so much traffic, if we could only afford the gas.
Wouldn't that leave IDAHOANS in Idaho then???
Cept JR is selling heaven fries now
What to do now?
Look at our State, Idaho
Look at our State, Idaho control by the conservative republicans for over 25 years, the conservative republicans must claim responsibility for current state of everything in Idaho, our poor roads and highways, lack of industry and jobs, extremely poor education system, no modern energy development, failure to address Urban growth, manipulating voting districts to maintain conservative power. How can you not vote for change of some sort.
Look at our State, Idaho
Better roads than the entire South, great industries, continually ranked in business magazines as a top business location, educated workforce, strong colleges and universities and more private ones moving in each year, public schools graduating above the national average with lower spending than many states, nuclear energy on the horizon, urban areas with smart enough leadership to not be slickered into expensive and useless public transportation - wow!
How can you not vote to stay the course with conservative leadership?
Moving here was like moving 30 years backin time,
from Nebraska! I though the Oregon trail was still in use when we hit Idaho. All the crooked as a dog's hind leg crap by Mayor Coles & the rest of the republican party were being committed years ago in other states. Idaho is so conservative it just took a while to catch up, they're getting with it now though. Catching up & learning the crooked & lying methods must be a conservatave tactic, a learned tool of politics.
Better roads, ask a truck driver about the better roads in Idaho. Otter would have raised vehicle registration 1000% & the only roads that would have improved would have been leading to new developments put in by the good old boy, wanna be, worn out, old, Texas ranger club.
Why do we need millions of $ for roads if they're so good? Have you been on I84 between Boise & Caldwell or to the Oregon Border? How many people have to die on these better roads before somebody points out how bad they are? If they were still dirt some in the republican party would be telling us how great they are & others would be telling us we need to raise taxes? I guess death of a taxpayer on the way going to work is conservative, smart leadership? Crooked as a dog's hind leg lifted over the taxpayer is an Idaho politician's idea of conservative.
I've been here seven years & there's a new scandal every year involving some policitian, costing taxpayers millions of $ but we're conservatively short millions for roads that are better than the entire South? Why would we compare ourselves to the South? If we're going to do that maybe we should be looking at the child abuse in Idaho. Every time I read something negative abut Idaho, somebody jumps up & says, "that's not true, that's not fair." Why can't the conservatives accept the failure they promote & poverty they shove down the working class taxpayer's throat? The conservative truth is a big fat lie.
Yea, Idaho is the picture of success, republican criminal success. Hide the poverty & show the rich, living the good life.
Idaho has a lot to offer, unfortunately the politicians are destroying it for self gain. Killing Salmon so farmers can water the desert while fertile soil is developed, sold & foreclosed on only to resell. Trading public land used for outdoor recreation to ranchers/agri corrutption/contributors who will make millions later selling the land to out of state millioniares for private hunting estates. Taxpayers are going to lose millions in these great land swaps then never hunt again on land that used to be open & public. Idaho could be making millions, billions on outdoor recreation if the republcian party so nicely tucked away in contributor's pockets weren't selling out for conservative profit.
Idahoans trade gun rights for all other rights leaving taxpayers $8 an hour jobs & increased property, vehicle, & sales taxes to pay for better roads to promote business & developers who get tax cuts & incentives for providing those great jobs so people can't afford to buy a house.
Hill billie Bob's driveway with a sign, Bob's drive or Dewey lane? In the end there won't be anyplace to hunt & the guns/rights everything was traded for will be useless unless you can afford a membership to hunt on one of the millionaire estates. All the Idahoans will be whining because they were taken yet never realize how or why. People already say, I used to hunt right here & used to catch great Salmon just over yonder. We'll pay millionaires to hunt on what was once public land & catch 6 inch trout in a pond where they're stocked. That should draw tourism & millions of $.
Republicans distort the truth, sell it making billions, & then have the guts to tell us what a great deal taxpayers got? Behind republican doors conservative means bend over. Republicans are conservative like Craig is anti gay in an airport mens room.
"...how many people have to die...?'
None. Leave earlier, slow down, wear your seat belt, drive safely, and don't blame the government for every human mistake.
Tell that to Ore-Ida workers!
Many of them live way less than two miles from the place and they always play beat the clock. I lived about three blocks from the entrance for over four years, so I don't need Wiki-wacky for a source either.
I used to drive semi into Boise once & sometimes twice a week
from Caldwell to Boise between 7:00 & 8:00 AM. Absolutely right people need to start at a reasonable time, need take responsibility, wear the seat belt, be careful, & all that but I don't see the answer to the question. Have you ever driven on I84 between Caldwell & Boise? The road is lousy, terrible, for an interstate it is one of the worst roads in the country. Donner Pass may be worse but not much. The ruts & groves in that stretch of road will throw you all over the lane. Add moisture, water or snow & the traffic while going into the sun, crash.
Blame government? The road is years overdue for repair & should have been widened long ago as well. Lenghtening the Garrity on ramp took years & there were accident everyday. Who is to blame when government promotes development & doesn't require infrastructure first knowing the traffic will only increase with more homes & business? It's poor management, planning, all about the money, contributors & developers. Can't hide the truth on this stretch of road. People have died on this road when they weren't on their way to work, rolled over when tossed about due to the ruts. The state is going to add one lane which should have been added years ago when in reality should be adding two lanes, both East & West, so they don't have to do it again next year.
Drive out to Nampa & come on into Boise on a bright, sunny, weekday morning during rush hour. Drive it any time, the ruts are there all the time. Quit handing out tax cuts & incentives to contributors & explain that we need the roads for their business, to move product & get employees to work. Would corporations rather bring their product in on a mule train? They can pay taxes too, every city, county, state, & federal highway needs to be maintained to serve the public & taxes pay for it. That is the problem with campaign finance. It's the same responsibility you talk about individuals taking, has to happen on a corporate level as well as individual. Buying representation doesn't maintain the roads!
I84 from Caldwell to Boise is a perfect example of republicans shirking their responsibility while blaming individuals! People have been paying their taxes for years & the road has been years behind in maintenance just as long.
"...rolled over...due to the ruts."
Wrecks and injuries are tragic, but no one rolls their auto due to ruts in I84. They roll due to driving too fast, inattentive driving, poor driving.
We have roads that need repair - but Idaho's roads are certainly not the worst. Blaming "campaign finance" or "contributors and developers" for our bad roads is just silly.
Even the otter claims Idaho's roads need repair/$$$$$!
Not the worst? Your perception is distorted by conservative views. You are of the 14% to 25% of people who think Congress & the President are doing the job well. I guess you're saying old worn out, wanna be Texas ranger, otter is wrong? Can't have it all in a virtual, conservative, replublican world.
Sorry Bounce but somebody must be lying. Either the roads need repair or they don't. otter was all about millions of dollars for roads, 600% increase in vehicle registration, & you're saying the roads are fine, no they need repair but their not the worst. Stop with the republican spin. Either the roads need repair or they don't. Sorry Bounce but people do have accidents when roads are so bad a car is thrown all over due to ruts. Changing lanes requires Nascar driving skills, holding a beer & smoke while on the phone, make it distracting. Are you're suggesting 35 MPH interstate speeds between Nampa & Boise due to road conditions. With all the accidents, 35 MPH is about the average speed anyway. We'll be down to 5 MPH if our conservative republican representation doesn't hear that popping sound soon, the sound of their heads coming out.
Blaming campaign finance or pointing out a serious problem? I'm not the only one who disagrees with buying our representation while it may not to be a problem to the conservative republicommunist party. Republicans & democrats are worst then terrorists. Whistle blowers are kicked around all the time for reporting government waste, fired from jobs for standing up for America & the American people. If Americans taxpayers/whistleblowers had any representation, that wouldn't be the case. If government wasn't failing there wouldn't be whistleblowers.
My message to all the 18 year old kids who are thinking about signing up to fight for their country. Don't throw away your life on the lie America has become. In the end, if you live, you'll be sorry, & have to pay over & over again because politicians take $ from corporations & agri corruption then hand out tax cuts you'll absorb. You can have an $8 an hour job if an illegal immigrant doesn't get it first. You only have one life & wasting it on America isn't patriotic in the 21st century, it's just not using good judgement to fight for America. Do as the corporations & agri corruption do, go for the money, put yourself before country. I never used to think that way but this two party joke & campaign finance have changed the way America is run, individuals have no representation. America has become a lie run by corporate unAmerica & agri corrution with our representatives in the pocket of contributors. The two parties running America into the dirt don't care about one US soldier fighting for America, they only care about their party, contributors, & the $$$. Health care for returning Vets & the fact that many Vets froms wars past live on the streets tells it all.
America's infrastructure was in need of $1.6 trillion in 2001 just to bring it to a passing grade. That was the recomendation of the American Society of Civil Engineers structure, a D plus. The following are from old newspaper articles.
I believe 8-3-07 is date of the bridge collapse in Minnesota.
In 1998 the Federal Highway Administration set a 10 year goal of shoring up the
nation's nearly 600,000 federally funded bridges. More than one in four of those
bridges are still rated as STRUCTURALLY DEFICIENT!
9-5-03, Garnnett News Service: Engineers say nation's roads & electrical
grids are crumbling.
In 2001 the American Society of Civil Engineers gave the nation's structures
a D plus. After an 8-03 blackout it came to light that government spending at
all levels would have to increase 42% to maintain the nations current road
capacity & rise 94% to keep up with growth. The ASCE found no significant
progress since 2001 when a D plus was handed out. $1.6 trillion was the
price tag to fix the infrastructure.
What would $1.6 trillion in 2001 be in 2008. According to republican math, I suppose those numbers are virtual. I'm reasonably sure most republicans are smarter than the average engineer, making any findings by the American Society of Engineers false, misleading, & the roads are in great shape. Even otter knows the roads need repair, his horse sidesteps like a republican when riding I84. Otter must want I84 from Nampa to Boise named after him. otter avenue, otter way or no way, or maybe, otter known better road, next exit, ustick, where the sun don't shine.
I still have that bridge in Minnesota for sale Bounce buddy, you in the market for a well used, slightly in need of repair, bridge? Like car fax do we need bridge fax or road fax. We're buying with our tax $ so we might be asking some questions.
I recently read where some foreign company or country is going to buy into America's roads in PA, lease maybe, & charge tolls. No more taxes for roads, just tolls paid to a company or country other than US? That's got to be democratic or republican planning. Sounds pretty conservative to me. I wonder how much the toll will be after they spend billions to repair the old dirt lane which has been neglected for years? $5 a mile sound like a good deal? That should bring the price groceries up a little. By the time we add in the farm bill, sales tax on groceries, gas, toll, & who knows, a loaf of bread should be around $10, virtual. Refering to money as Canadian, euro, or American dollars, it'll be American virtual. Like the national debt, it isn't real?
Just like tapping into Social Security, Congress failed & found a way to pay for their failure by duping the American people again. Like Social Security we'll be paying many times over instead of addressing or solving the problem when it needed to be done so we pay many times over. That's representation, virtual, conservative, representation.
Spin Bounce, spin.
Poor reader
You wrote: "Either the roads need repair or they don't." I believe I wrote that we have roads that need repair.
My point was that ruts in I84 doesn't flip cars - speed and poor driving flips cars.
I have driven in 48 states and Idaho is somewhere in the middle, not the best roads and not by far the worst.
Yes, you can "have an $8.00 an hour job..." Or you can get training and/or an education and have a career.
Life in the USA is not perfect, but it is mostly what we make of it.
You have a job and will probably continue to have SOME job...
$8 is minimum wage in Oregon however. If I could make that I certainly would be doing better than the 650 a month from SS benefits I live on.
doing better
You are too quick and too good of a writer to be living on $650 a month SS. There are many options to suppliment that if you wish to.
My right thumbtip is numb and my left is affected by my wrists,
and it's from a lousy stand and typing position. Makes gripping the hand grips on my bike and mousing a phun thing. Also make is harder to use tools to work on my A/V equipment. I like to write longer things and avoid them as much as I can and I edit a lot because my fast is sloppy.
That car just wanted it's belly scratched!
"Better roads than the entire South"
Don't sprain your back setting the bar that low.
Their roads are okay...compared to Britney's driving
Bad Roads are a result of the Tax Shift
And the tax shift is away from the Big Corporations to the individual citizens.
How many of us have our own paid lobbyist at the Legislature and Congress?
The shift from shows that 30 years ago the big corporations paid 60% of the taxes and now pay 16%.
It's to the point where we do like Abraham Lincoln and Harry Truman did--seize the assets of the big corporations.
I agree, & isn't it funny how republicans call themselves
conservative then have to wear depends to prevent the overflow when they go on about tax cuts. How do tax cuts for individuals come about when we have to absorb all the taxes evaded by corporations through campaign finance? The numbers you point out, 60% down to 16% indicate individuals are paying 44% corporations used to pay plus 40% of taxes we already paid. How could we realize tax cuts if we're now paying close to 90% of all the taxes? That must be what republicans mean by, no child left behind, or they'll con you into the war as well so as to finish your public education.
I'm reasonably sure a republican is going to jump in, correct our math, & point out how fortunate we really are. We could be paying all the taxes & if we elected democrats we would be, this must be the greatest country in the world! Keep a close eye on the shell with the pea under it, around & around they go, & which shell is the pea under? Politics & shell games, just another day at the circus. Kiss your money goodbye.
Bad roads predate Sitting Bull around here...
they just look fancy now!
PS Lewis and Clark had bad rapids and beavers!
Name calling?
I'm hurt, can't believe you would say such a thing. Poor reader? I read fine Bounce, I point out what I want to point out, just like you do. Tax shifting is a little like that, isn't it? Bait & switch?
I knew an old con artist, grifter, when I was in my late teens. Old guy swore he never worked a day in his life, hustled pool, gambling, he conned people for a living. He was a likeble old guy, won you over with a smile, words of praise & that confidence. I guess that's why they called them confidence men. Just like politicians!
Could have been President had he taken another avenue. Must have been good, never spent his life behind bars, locked up, he was in bars a lot. He was a politician, didn't run for or get voted into office but he did the same thing I see our representatives doing everyday.
My folks warned me about this guy, my mom worked with his sister in an old folks home. It was too late in life for him though, he was harmless, more in need of friends than another mark. I worked construction, housing, painting, concrete, & you know, the jobs Americans won't do. We painted his sister's house in which he lived, one of the more entertaining jobs we had. He'd bing out a beer at the end of the day & tell us stories, entertaining. Looking at the political circus & the way America is run takes me back to those days. Promote the alcohol & blow smoke rings.
Poor reader? The message isn't always in the words or way it's written. Sometimes it's by whom it is written making it best to look past the words written into the reason. Republican spin has you calling me names. Unlike you I'm not in the phone book, for a reason. I don't want the grifters calling or knocking on my door. For some reason I keep getting their political junk mail while my mail takes weeks to get where it needs to be.
The Post office, another government office promoting junk mail most people would rather not receive. Wonder why?
Personally I like you Bounce buddy, you just need a friend, like the old con artist. Don't take offense to Bounce, it's a fine $25 handle you can be proud of with no personal disrespect intended. If I had a handle like that it would be in my obituary & on the stone when they plant me. It has character, the kind of name people hear or look at & wonder why. Has ring to it, people wonder why or how he got it? You're lucky to have friends like me, even if you think I read poorly. You don't have to tell everybody just because you don't like me. I skipped a lot of school, shoot a fair game of pool, & can spot a grifter others may not. Don't I get any credit for all that? Grade me on a curve here Buounce.
You give Foreignoregonian credit for his writing & he never gave you a fine handle like Bounce. I'm starting to feel unappreciated. It's starting to sound like I can't read or write so I better quick sign up for the military. I could go to Iraq to defend America from imaginary threats, the ones that never showed up until we did, after major fighting was over, about four & a half years ago. Bush's plan worked, suckerd the terrorist in. Too bad the price of oil doubled, along with the cost of war driving our economy into a swirl spin down the thunder bucket. Will we ever know what the true costs were?
I find it interesting that big oil suggest the world using
more oil, demand as the reason for the price of oil going to $133 a barrel possibly $200 before long. Did the world start using two, three, or four times as much oil, overnight in line with rates oil prices have risen? Must be gospel. I can see it over a period of a few years but oil prices have almost doubled in the last, how many months?
Sounds a little suspicious, but then I'm not a Congressman asking the questions/enjoying my investments in oil or AG subsidies. Were we wasting time asking oil executives who couldn't recall their salaries? Better get back to America's more pressing issues, steroids in baseball!
Did I say we need full finacial disclosure by all our representatives? Wonder where the two parties stand on that?
Never mind, we already know.
"...were we wasting our time...?
Absolutely. What a joke for Congress to ask private sector people their salaries. It's actually none of their business. I would have declined to answer. They haven't called in tobacco execs to ask about the high cost of cigs.
Yes, Congress wastes a lot of time meddling in issues that are not theirs, Constitutionally, baseball included. Sorta like Texas taking 400 kids from their moms.
"...best to look past the words..." Hmmm, you do that at your peril. Want to know what I mean? Simply read what I write. No hidden messages. I'm pretty open about my communications - sometimes to my peril. But I say and write what I mean.
You do score well on the curve...I like pool, but it's probably my worst "sport," somewhere behind bowling. Haven't done either in years. You write well, but I gave FO props because he mentioned the money thing. There is a lot of stay-at-home writing work that can be done, if he is short on income.
Big oil is right in terms of usage. China brings one million new cars "online" every year. We and other countries increase too - but nowhere near that level. If Iraq shut down oil production entirely the price of gas would not be affected as much as it has gone up. There are many oil producing nations, and many factors impacting price - to that end Iraq is a small player.
And yes, oil per barrel has doubled in months - and gas has not. That is important to note. Congress should call in the oil execs, note their cost per barrel and thank them for keeping the price per gallon so low. Recommend a bonus to their boards...just a thought.
HELL_OHHHH?
Gas is well over 4 dollars on the coasts and as late as last summer it was much closer to $2.50. #2 Diesel was over $4 a while back and PROPANE was $2.75 when I asked recently to figure if I can introduce carcinogens into my meat the right way on my birthday next month.
I wreck my wrists and waste my time chasing down the stuff I need while sacrificing that which needs to be done and make my life miserable because nobody gives a damn to stop and try or to think and I have to rely on nincompoops...PLEASE.
Gas..."was much closer to $2.50."
Yes, and in the time that gas at the pump has doubled, the price of oil per barrel has four-pled or five-pled (or whatever). That's the point. The oil companies have held our pump costs down relative to what their costs have gone are up.
Exxon makes seven cents profit ($0.07) per gallon. That is less than half the federal tax per gallon - not counting state and other taxes.
Calling your bluff and memory into question...
Oil was between $30-50 a barrel for several years until recently. Companies like Enron fueled the addiction of speculation that destroyed the hopes of millions in the 1920's and 30's with dreams that could never be supported by reality. The one defining moment of breakdown and loss was NOT 9/11 but NEW ORLEANS.
OPEC says this isn't a supply problem but a consequence of crazed speculaters and their glazed donut rave orgy (my words of course). Hater, hate thine self. The harm is that we ignore the facts and let it feed. Nobody claims to know these facts and somebody should, we all say.
Trust nobody and kick butt yourself. I guess. Lots of excuses.
Difference is, representatives are on our payroll.
Oil exects aren't working for US, their salary may not be our business but I wasn't the one who asked how much they made. Congress had to ask something but how serious is Congress when asking big oil any of this? Even one of the judges who recused himself recently from a case, had investments in oil. Was he one of the judges who appointed Bush in 2000? Would we ever see justice or hear the truth when so many invested in oil are asking the questions. $$$$, drives US & will no doubt be the reason we fail.
If the US leases to oil companies, I would like to know what they pay in lease. Would you lease your land or rights to someone for $100 a year if they were making millions a year or would you look around for a better deal? May be a contract on prices? Are there any subsidies in the oil business? Like the Exxon Valdez settlement, billions yet just a few days profit, $$$. Seems to me the free market you're all about might work well in this situation. Maybe other companies would like to bid on leases & these guys might do better on prices if they thought they were going to lose their lease. Maybe the US government needs to take over the oil business, put our own people to work for US & send the oil companies looking for leases & oil someplace else. I wonder how much $ they'd be missing out on when we start drilling in all the places we no doubt will in the future.
How much would gas be if we controlled the oil business? Would we pay the CEO the salary they get now? We only pay the President $400K a year. How much is the entire US worth compared to an oil company? Should we put the President in for a raise or bring everybody else down to reality?
How well is democracy really working? All I read about is what the next guy is going to do, same thing the last guy was going to do, which is going to be the same thing the next guy is going to promise. The truth is we keep changing players but corporate $ stays in the game. Who is running the country?
If you're going to take $25 off the price of a barrel of oil for hedging then let's consider the price of gas based on the price of oil before hedging. It is closer to $105 a barrel so how does gas & diesel compare now? Gas hasn't increased in comparison to oil? In 1978 gas was approximatly .75 a gal & oil was about $35 a barrel. $35 x 3 =$105 & .75 x 3 = $2.25 so why aren't we paying $2.25 a gallon & why is diesel more expensive than gas now when it used to be less than gas? 35 x 4=140 & .75 x 4=$3 so why are we paying almost $4 a gallon for gas & $4.70 for diesel? Whose numbers should we use?
Where do you want to start, I'm sure the numbers & comparisons change from year to year. If I recall, gas was about .25 a gallon in the early seventies, oil was around $12 a barrel. $105 divided by 12 =8.75 & .25 x 8.75=$2.18 a gallon. There, I fixed it. Where we at on those comparisons & who is making the money? Starting to look like gas has increased in $ right along with the price of oil & diesel even more.
Why didn't Congress ask big oil why diesel is more than gas now? Did all the diesel cars & trucks put out by the auto industry play a role. Did anybody ask before hand, if putting diesel cars & trucks would someday be competition with over the road trucks & drive fuel prices up taking the price of everything else along with? When we elect people who accept $ from corporations with other than America's interest on their mind, you get representatives who work for the corporations, not the nation or the people/taxpayer who pay the representatives, provide health care, & retirement the people lose more of everyday.
If you look at oil spikes since 1973 it always went up when war in Gulf regions were happening. Do you think maybe the Bush family, oil companies, terrorist & everybody in the business knew, had all this information before, something to gain, & are manipulating the world to make $? For all we know 9/11 wasn't just a terrorist attack. If I were asking questions about oil prices I'd start looking a little deeper than we are now. Oil companies wouldn't be the only ones answering questions. This would go back to free trade, NAFTA, & every possible link.
Full disclosure!
Yom Kippur War, oil embargo, Iranian revolution, Iran/Iraq war, Gulf war, PDVSA srike, Iraq war, & now Asian growth. Every one of the above caused a spike in oil prices. Does that Asian growth say anything about free trade? While US jobs are going to China, Vietnam, India, & every other country benefitting from free trade, those countires now demand more oil which in turn is driving our cost of oil & fuel up taking everything along with. How much is the cost of cheap goods provided through slave labor in China now? Maybe the smartest thing to do is shut down free trade agreements all together so other nations don't need so much oil & fuel. Stop going to war with Gulf nations, let them kill each other, & quit promoting demcoracy all over the world. I have to believe free trade was not very well thought through or greed, $$$ was all the people who pushed free trade could see, didn't look very far down the road or in the interest of US. Why does America use so much more oil & fuel than other nations? The same reason other nations are beginning to.
The US government isn't doing the bang up job you give them credit for if they promoted all the other nations of the word into using more oil which in turn drove up the price of oil while driving our economy South!
I think the average US soldiers fighting in Iraq & Afghanistan are protecting these oil companies along with the rest of the nation. Either we're all in this together or not. Why would an 18 year old kid sacrifice his life for America if people or companies in the land he's fighting for are profitting on his family back home while they do without or lose their home? Maybe the message to young Americans should be to take care of yourself & family & let all the corporations go fight the war. Pay for protection, or hire mercenaries.
Our government is doing US more harm than terrorist. If government were doing the job we hire & pay them for, 9/11 wouldn't have happened. Corporate influence was & still is distracting our representatives through sweet deals & we're paying in more ways then anyone can imagine.
Tabacco? Take away the taxes & like gas, what does a pack cost? Add the cost of health care & what does a pack cost? Why isn't governmnet all aver alcohol? Over 17,000 Americans die in alcohol related auto accidents every year, our prisons & county jails are full of drunk drivers. Contibutors & $ generated through alcohol related businesses. Where is the trade off? How does the money in profit compare to the cost created by the negatives? Government took the mob out of bootlegging for the money but we still have the same problems only worse & it's promoted by government. They compound the problem by arresting people for drinking one too many, we pay to police, jam up the courts, house them in overcrowded prisons, & feed them.
Why not legalize pot & make some more money to pay for more roads for drunk drivers to cruise. Use some of the money from taxes on pot to fight meth use. Legalize pot, have people who buy or smoke in pot bars, sign up & you have a list of people who associate with users of all drugs. Pot does lead to other drugs, right? All those stoned hippies protesting Vietnam got US out of that war, give them a chance to get US out of Iraq. Legaize it, tax it, profit from it, & stop wars saving billions of $.
Seems odd that we no longer read about the murder rates in America. More people die on the streets of America everyday then in Iraq & it doesn't even make the news. Wouldn't want a country like iran to point out what a violent country we are? I can't believe they don't stir the pot ofver ll the nuclear plants we have since we won't allow anyone else to build them. There are more court cases involving Idahoans in murders & violent crime right here in the valley then Iraq. Why were we so concerned about the people of Iraq when you can be murdered in America & it doesn't even make the news, except in the local paper.
The local police are armed to fight a major assualt, have to drop some poor slob like a dirty pair of shorts every now & again just for practice in case terrorists attack. Terrorist don't scare me, my local police & government do! We could defend ourselves against terrorist, government knocks on your door & you're history. If they don't kill you they'll use your tax $ to put you behind bars. Haven't been any people released with DNA evidence recently, has there? Wonder how they ended up in jail?
"...investments in oil."
You likely have investments in oil if you have a mutual fund, 401K, 403B, or Social Security. Don't like "big oil?" Quit using their products. We all have that choice.
Judges did not appoint Bush, they merely ruled that the Florida vote count as verified by the Florida Secretary of State and Legislature was accurate according to Florida's election laws. That gave Bush the majority of Electoral votes - the only ones allowed by the Constitution.
What would you charge Qwest to put a cell phone tower on your land, or Miller Beer to put a billboard on your land? In either case you do not make the beer nor provide the phone service. That's how oil and gas leases work. You can drill and ship it yourself, or you can lease it and have others do that. Leases typically don't pay a lot because you don't do anything.
We have chosen Capitalism as our economic and monetary system. This allows CEO's and others - actually all of us to earn whatever the market will bear. The President is a public employee by choice and has agreed - as have all public employees whether fed, state, or local to work outside the competitive market and earn a set salary. I would not want anyone to serve as president or governor because it paid well. Only kings make more than the people.
"Why would an 18 year old kid sacrifice his life...?" No kids do, they are men and women when they put the uniform on. They sacrifice to protect our freedom to have these exchanges free of fear of censorship or imprisonment. A freedom not enjoyed by very many nations. Read my Memorial Day column in the IBR - www.idahobusiness.net
They sacrifice so they or their families can work for corporations and earn the income that will let them send their children to college and better themselves.
You write about letting the corporations fight the wars...so now Sears and The Gap are the problem? Corporations employ this nation's people. In our chosen Capitalist system what is good for business is generally good for the country and our people. When corporations make profits they hire and promote and build and purchase and pay - we need these things every day.
"If government were doing the job...9/11 wouldn't have happened...?" Sheesh, give people a break. I have neighbors who don't have their Christmas lights down yet. I knocked our patio screen door off the runners this morning and spilled my coffee - GG, we live in an imperfect world of human people. I guess I accept mistakes pretty well, especially since I make a few.
Scared of your "local police?" Wow, not me. I trust them everyday to keep the city safe for me and my family. Most days they do and I am thankful.
No longer "read about murder rates?" Where have you been? Every year the FBI publishes the national crime statistics - you can read about it any day you wish. And murder in the U.S.A. has been on the decline nationally.
Thanks for your post - I'm glad I had the opportunity to help you with a few points.
I know where my investments are, not in oil.
I made the point of oil spikes to support full disclosure. If I were an oil man, the President whose family is thick as thieves with people in Saudi Arabia, bin Laden family, I'd know when oil spiked. Corporations pay people to research the product they deal in, know when the money is going to be made. If I were an investment freak I would have been looking at these numbers as well. If Congress were on the ball, not a bunch of people put in office through campaign finance, we might have proficient representation.
You made a point of hedgers pushing oil to $133, about $25 higher than it would be otherwise. Profitteers? Fine make money on oil but don't tell me it has no influence. Full dosclosure might tell US who & why. Why has this Iraq war gone on for five years when Bush came right out & said major fighting was over years ago? If you look at the Gulf War the oil spike was short, unsustained. Look where it is now. You're just happy with whatever the party suggest as long as the party benefits. The two parties are America's biggest threat, not terrorist. Contributors buy stock in each parrty, hedging their bet.
Doesn't seem odd that all Bush can do is war? Makes a speech about appeasement, no way, war is the only way? That sends a message, one I'm sure terrorist didn't miss. That's the kind of meesage they became terrorist over. Fine, let's go with the war plan. Why didn't we nuke Iraq & watch as they, like Japan would have said, no more.
It's much more profitable for Bush to keep US in Iraq, more profitable for middle East nations selling oil to stay in war, more profittable to go to war with Iran if Bush has his way before he's out. War works well for people like Bush, Hitler, Saddam, the nuts in Iran & North Korea, but there is always the oppoprtunity to avoid it through negotiation first. If not, be the heavy hitter. Bush wasn't going to take no as an answer to war in Iraq! He never took no as an answer, he wanted & got war!!! Bush doesn't listen to military advisors or anyone else, he goes to war! He likes war, $$$, & killing. You often refer to kings, Bush is in his own mind & a war President. He comes right out & says it? Who would keep a guy as President when he has a chit eating grin while proclaiming himself a war president while we have a war going on with an outcome not decided?
Did judges appoint Bush? The election was a big joke considering we're killing millions of people spreading democracy. If my neighbor has guns & says something about me or I perceive him as a threat, I can't attack him. If I call the police & they say he's not a threat & then I attack him, I'm the evil one. That's exactly what Bush promoted. You go on about police, I'm basically the same way, know they won't come after me. If for some reason they do, they come around loaded for bear. Ten cops, guns pulled, 57 shots fired, drop you like a dirty pair of shirts, 13 holes & CPR? Oops, he died. You have the ombusdman but if you're not a state senator, you're guilty unil proven dead. The police are trained to kill first & ask questions later.
Like the slogan about causing PTSD.
I have to search the FBI news to get murder statistics in America when the paper has a running tally on Iraq? I don't go looking, I read the daily paper, watch a little news, it's hard enough to keep up with out looking for this crap. Most the news I see involves government, most of it is troublesome failure. That's why I suggest every government agency is failing, they're in the news everyday. Where else would I get the idea. If the news said gas was $2 a gallon, we're not in war, USDA/no downer cows, tainted meat, lead in toys, toothpaste, downwinders, FEMA failed in New Orleans, police arrested 900 illegal immigrants today, & no politicans caught in political scandals today, just to name a few problems, I'd be in support of the way government is running America.
Must be that government failure is more newsworthy than murder on the streets. Don't suppose crime will increase while the economy is in the crapper, like it always does. Where do we invest in that? Is crime virtual? $2 a share today, $50 a share next week? If you're so in tune with the FBI files, how many Americans were murdered in America last year?
Bill boards, you compare oil to bill boards? The environmental impact of a billboard is compareable to drilling oil? The money generated by a billboard, as adverising you suggest doesn't guarantee profit, is compareable to oil? A billboard on the side of the road, taking up no space or promoting traffic all over your land? Your reasoning is republican. The point was to find somebody else to lease, make more money, capitalism you're all about? If Exxon can't sell US oil at a better price, maybe we'd be better served to find a companythat can & will. Capitalism. Maybe a foreign company if an American oil companies won't do the job for a better price, like Bush suggests Americans won't do the jobs for those wages.
9/11, give people a break? The President, Commander in Chief is in charge as you suggest of defending America. Any job I ever had suggested I be held responsible when I didn't get it done. The President, Congress, & Senate get a pass on 9/11? It wasn't a spilled cup of coffee or a screen door coming off the track. Mistakes aren't all quite the same as 9/11 or war. It's not a perfect world & we all make mistakes but to compare spilled coffee & Christmas lites to 9/11 pretty much tells the story. You're view is just a little distorted, have a little republican party in your eye & mind.
18 year olds sign up for the military because they're 18, haven't lived long enough to know better & won't as long as Bush & McCain have their say. We need to have a draft so everyone has a reason to support or not support war. Like Vietnam, war in Iraq would be over or never started if we had a draft. Public approval isn't strong enough as getting out suggests. How many Americans, let's have a vote, let democracy work, would support staying in Iraq or going to war with Iran? If the votes goes to support of war, I'm all for it, let's quit doing it half way though. War is war, not nicey, nicey, Bush traveling to other nations & putting an a big act. Let's get the big guns out & show the world that we're the power Bush seems to think we are. He's all talk about war, smiling & shaking hands with people all over the world but what is he saying behind their back? Can they trust a man like that?
What about the free trade & oil consumption by other nations benfitting from free trade. How much oil would they need if they weren't making products they sell to US for less then we make them for because Bush & co. break unions & promote illegal immigration while holding down American wages? I think it's all backwards. Shut down free trade & put Americans to work at $14, $16, or more an hour. People with money spend money on American goods. Somebody needs to crunch the numbers now that oil is driving the price of everything up. When oil hits $200 a barrel & Amricans are paying $8 a gallon for gas, will $6 or $8 an hour pay for it. Will people be able to buy even tainted Chinese goods? What will bread, milk, & beef cost? What will a man have to earn to buy all this great stuff from China, not America? When those wages go up, what will it do the the prices of American goods? It looks a little perpetual & tough to get ahead of from where I sit. But then I'm not making million on oil.
People in other nations are making more $, buying cars, factories using oil & electricty, & water. What has free trade really done for US? US companies go offshore & don't pay taxes. Illegal immigration has been killing US from within, driving up health care costs, breaking Social Security, what about crime? First our representatives promoted illehgal immigration costing US jobs & wages & now we're paying a fortune to get rid of it. Union busting for cheap labor & abusing illegal immigrants is coming back at US. Somebody made money, contributors!
This two party system & campaign finance is taking a toll. You're right, it isn't a perfect world. When somebody points out the problems, it might help to address them. The possibility of 9/11 was pointed out before it happened. This two party system & campaign finance are being pointed out as a huge problem but do the two parties or corporate contributors making all the money care? Fights over, so is working class middle America if we allow this mismanaged mess to continue.
I'm not republican or democrat, I'm American & for some reason believe being American trumps the other two, or should. Terrorist aren't a threat, republicans, democrats, corporate contributrs, & agri corruption are.
"Full dosclosure?"
Disclosure of what? Profiteers? What is illegal about speculating and making a profit?
I didn't search FBI files to find the murder rates, each year the report is printed in the Statesman, USA Today, it's on the morning and/or evening news. I don't care to hunt for it either, I'm not "in tune with the FBI files," but I remember the newscast/story stating the murder rate was down yet again. So many things you want "disclosure" on - Bush's income - it's public, oil company earnings - public, that's a great thing about this nation, our stuff is all public.
You mention campaign finance...what is the problem? If I have money and want to spend it to support a cause or person, who has the right to tell me "no?" In a free nation no one should be able to tell me that I cannot buy billboards, radio ads, tv ads, or assemble people for luncheons or dinners to pitch a cause or a candidate.
The Constitution states "Congress shall make no law...abridging the freedom of speech,...or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances." That is campaigning - spending money, etc. You want to take that freedom away?
Bush said the major fighting was over - five years ago. He was wrong. But a majority of the Democratically held Congress seems to think it is important enough to continue the fight so they continue to fund it. They can end it any day of the year they wish. It has not been Bush's war since the day he lost the Republican majority in Congress.
All-in-all you seem to not like politicians or corporations. In our political and economic system that doesn't leave much.
I'm looking at blue skies, a beautiful day, the luxury of watching the Indy 500, my flag is flying, I'll join in remembrances tomorrow and vote with excitement and good hope on Tuesday. What a wonderful, wonderful place we have been blessed to live.
You're better than most, a least admit there are
mistakes made & room for improvements. Go ahead & believe what you want, I've seen first hand government coverups, city, county, state, & federal. Republicans are all about their party & democrats theirs. America is taking the fall for both & there are crooked politicians selling US out to special interest. I know how well I've had it in America, don't have to tell me. I also know I've been taken by government in some situations & I know why & how.
Why do laws come about, people do things that make laws neccessary. Campaign finance has laws to live by too, only difference is lawmakers aren't going to pass laws restricting themsleves when it comes to money any more than they have too. Let's use the democracy we're killing so many innocent people with to decide. Pump all the numbers out to the people, who contributes, who receives, who has been caught up in it, & the entire ball of wax. Let the peole vote on campaign finance. That would be attacked by government just like terrorism.
If it were up to me we'd get rid of both the democratic & republican parties & individuals would run as individuals. That would eliminate a lot of the problems with campaign finance, no more passing money around. Either that or contributors would have to give the same amount of $ to everybody & the money would be taxed or taken. I don't see the difference in you're agruement compared to mine except that you would have the money go to the party. Why not have the money go to the country? Representatives work for US, they're on our payroll while getting money, it's our money. Why should the party benefit & the country lose? Why should I watch my tax $ go to the farm bill when I know campaign finance drives the bill.
Seems to work just fine when government needs money, raise taxes, create a new tax, or siphon it from Social Security. If I vote for a republican why am I stuck with the rest of them or a democrat & stuck with the party? I can't vote for either without joining up with the rest? Is it a gang with initiations, & all that crap?
What are the two parties afraid of, America being run by Americans? The two parties are going to destroy America in their fight over who gets to be in charge. Like a couple spoiled brats fighting over that special toy. Take the toy away & the brats to the wood shed! Democrats can't get along within their own party, I wanna be president, no me. Republicans are like the mob, control freaks, all their money & it has to be their way.
Corporations used to pay about 50% of taxes. How is it corporations only pay about 12% now, individuals pay alomost 90%, & we're getting all these tax cuts? What good are tax cuts from 90% bring it done to 80% when I could have been paying on 50%? Shell game!
Corporations create jobs? Yea & then the people can make $8 an hour or government promotes illegal immigration to get those jobs. Look what illegal immigration has & is doing to US. That's what campaign finance is doing to US. If you can't see that you don't want to. You have pointed to government failing on illegal immigration yourself, too bad you don't see the root of the problem. The GOP is into unions busting?
What interest would an individual voted in by taxpayers have in promoting illegal immigration verses either of the two parties who are both getting millions in campaign contributions from businesses which need cheap labor? Agri corruption for instance. The parties want control of Congress, the Senate, & it doesn't hurt to have their party in the White House. $ dictates who runs the country making an individual's vote? Vote for a candidate on a couple major issues & you're stuck with the inbreeding of the party.
This two party joke is killing US, no doubt won't stop before we're belly up with each party blaming the other & campaign finance right in the middle. Congratulations bin Laden, on your victory through democracy & our representation in DC. One terrorist attack & our representation went into a fear, fear, fear, war, war, war, what are we going to do, I'm so scared mode, it's unbelievable.
Some say Obama is wrong to suggest negotiations with enemies because enemies are always enemies as history has proven. Seems to me we've been allies with Russia, enemies, maybe not directly as in war, & on friendly terms again as evident with Bush himself. We seem to get along with Vietnam, we killed millions in war with them & they killed thousands of Americans. If we're not going to ever negotiate then let's bring the Japanese to the game, no more trade, China either. I'm sure China never sold any weapons to countries we've been at war with. We're at war with everyone or have been. England? Had a little conflict with England, are they still the enemy? People change, countries, leaders, & policies change. Look at Bush, he's no diplomatic genius. How much damage has he done to US dipolmatically? When he's gone who will be willing to talk to US? No doubt countries that wouldn't while the war lord was in office?
Go ahead & belive what you want, it's a wonderful life. I know for a fact that if people like me didn't keep the pressure on, politicians would be stealing everything they could. If the few we see on the news weren't sacrificed by the rest, we'd see many more. It's like drunk drivers, what percentage are caught? Full dosclosure, or is there something to hide? Representatives work for US, it's about time we start acting like the boss & treat them like employees. I bet everyone would be surprised what we find & it wouldn't bother me if we never found any criminals as long as I knew it was an honest investigation. If run by Congress or the courts it wouldn't be, can't trust the White House or they wouldn't be living on executive privilege. It would have to be outside with no influence. Who would that be? That's how crooked the system is, can't even have an honest investigation. The rest of the world doesn't know?
Wrong, wrong, and eh, wrong
Wrong about murder rates: You asked if I knew how many died last year. 2007 statistics are not out yet but in 2006 the U.S. had 17,034 murders. That's a bunch, but down from 10 years previous - in 1996 there were 19,650, which was down from 10 years before that - in 1986 the murder rate was 20,613. As I said, the rate has been going down, not up. The population is up, and murder is down.
Wrong about taxes: No one pays 90% taxes, not even close with all levels of taxes combined. Not the poor, not the middle class, and not the rich.
Why should businesses pay 50%? They are the only ones who create jobs. The government can only fund jobs they get money for from people who pay taxes with money they earned from businesses.
Wrong about $8.00 an hour: The majority of workers in corporate America earn well more than that. Just how many $8.00 people does HP need? What percentage of Micron or GM employees only make $8.00? Our economy cannot be fueled by $8.00 workers, nor can we gather the taxes needed.
So you would do away with the two-parties and have campaign money go to the government to run the campaigns of non-party candidates? You just created government candidates - exactly what we fight to not have. For all their faults the Parties belong to the people who are members and the candidates represent them, not the government.
The Constitution did not create a two-party system, and we have more parties. It is our freedom of choice to join whichever we want or to remain independent. You would take away my freedom to join with like-minded people and work toward government reform as a group and put forth our candidates? Remarkable.
A: those that were not alive at 0 hours Zulu UTC Jan 1, 2008...
and WERE alive from 0 hours Zulu Jan 1, 2007 until that aformentioned date and time are officially in that list.
It you did not qualify to make that list, congratulations. If you DID and are reading this, Brian DePalma is looking for extras I hear.
Republican wrong, control freak mentality. Wiretap.
Sorry Bounce but I don't want government to run campaigns. I want the media, with no influence from government, the parties, or contributors to run the same amount of information, like a resume on every candidate. Don't tell me it can't be done on a level playing field. The Statesman seems to profile every candidate & if you read the news, watch the news, get online, all the information you need is out there on every candidate. It's corrupted by campaign finance now but it could all be equal time. Why should I get an overload on one candidate running for an Idaho seat when he received $1000 from every corporation in the country because he is affiliated with a certain party & a 200 word essay is all we get from an independant with only Idaho's interest in mind?
Why not make all the candidates put right up front where they get the money for all the campaign expenses? Something to hide. Do it on the TV ads, newspaper, & on all the signs they plant. For instance, I Jim Risch took money from, name all the contributors, everything, no hidden funds, & then www.followthemoney.org, www.opensecrets.org, & all the possible information from years past. When a politician can afford all these ads, let's see who paid for it all. Is Risch spending his own money? Fine, let's see it.
Why should businesses pay 50% of taxes? Income is income. Why do we need almost $2 trillion nationwide for an infrastructure years neglected? Politicians hand out tax cuts & incentives in return for campaign contributions & we pay higher taxes to make up for them. Is that $2 trillion virtual like the national debt? Politicians are failing US because thay hand out tax cuts for everything. That's how the two parties are failing US, tax cuts to contributors who give to both major parties when we need taxes. Raise sales tax, raise property tax, raise gas tax, all on individuals while cutting taxes for contributors? Who pays more taxes? It isn't 80 or 90% of your wages or gross individual income. It's 80 or 90% of all taxes split up so the individual pays the taxes evaded by contributors. Poor reading? Do the math. If corporations are paying 12% of taxes & individuals are paying 88% it doesn't mean as an individual you're paying 88% of you income. You're paying 88%, close to 40% of what corporate unAmerica used to pay as well as 50% individuals used to pay.
You make it very clear how the republican mind works, manipulates! Thanks, that should sway a few votes. I think the economy & state of the union has your math front page. Business become business through people working. Ideas may be the start of a business but hard work, demand, a product people need & want are the reason business succeed. A little honesty doesn't hurt, republicans should give it a try. When we allow business to buy out of taxes through contributions, we force others to pay the taxes & they become a slave to the contributor business & a slave to government. It's obvious government doesn't care about Americans having good paying jobs or we wouldn't have union busting, NAFTA & illegal immigration. $8 an hour is the price business want to pay so they buy politicians. It's simple math, & they've been destroying America for years through our representation in DC, ally to terror because terrorist recognize the abuse & lies & our representatives won't give it up.
Why is there a sales tax on groceries when we have a $280 billion farm bill? We're already taxed, {farm bill, subsidies=tax dollar} before groceries are planted. How phony is Bush to suggest he's against the farm bill, too much $ going to the rich? Had to show support for republicans against the bill & win over the public who are against his war, spending, tax cuts for the rich? That is the politicis I am against, lies!
I'm glad you put the murder stats up there, I don't recall seeing them in years. 17K murdered & 17K killed in alcohol related auto accidents in the US & Bush took US to Iraq over 3K killed in a terrorsit attack that wasn't by Iraq or Saddam? Murder seems to be an American way of life, add $ like campaign contributions to the equation & it's legal.
You made it all clear in Bush's plan to draw terrorist to Iraq so we could kill them all there. Never mind all the innocent Iraqi women & children? Good plan, democracy is a lot better than communism?
Bush is at it again with information fed to the UN. Article in the Statesman, 5-27-08 UN report says Iran is making gains in building nuclear arms. This article goes on about the gains, nuclear testing, enrichment, studies, charges by Bush of Iran sowing instability in Iraq. Suddenly the the article explains the information outlining the alleged studies were provided to the IAEA by the United States & other countries. No names of other countries? Sounds like Iraq all over again so when do we attack? Can't get any more transparent than this. Let's go to Iran & getthe rest of the terrorist, the ones we never got in Iraq?
If the world allows Bush to continue his attacks on nations of his choice just to keep driving up the price of oil it would be far worse than terror attacks on any nation. Bush is breaking the world economy for profit. This is what the two parties are doing, taking $ from contributors while profitting from US citizens & war they create based on their own fabrications. When can we expect a real attack against US by a nation or nations fed up with our attack on innocent people? I never used to put much stock in comparisons between Bush & Hitler. Bounce buddy, you're making me believe the two control freaks are related & Bush's agenda is not any different than Saddam, Hitler, or any of the world's other mad men.
When the guy is all about war, never negotiation, it's a little to clear. Bush tells US all about Russia's leader & their talks, nice visits between the two & negotiations are never an option. We were how close to nuclear war with Russia for years? Just a little contradicting? Everything Bush says is a lie.
"I want the media to run the same amount of information..."
You understand of course that in 2004 there were 21 presidential candidates nominated by official, registered political parties.
You want to know their contributers - just go to the Federal Election Commission at www.fec.gov
Candidates file their finance reports - all of that information is available to those who want it. Personally, I don't care so I don't want the media wasting time on who gave someone a dinner or a buck. I simply want to know the candidate's beliefs and character.
Bush will be gone soon. GG you tell me regularly what you don't like, Bush, all politicians are corrupt, government is corrupt, corporations are corrupt...what do you like, and who are some of the candidates you are supporting to make the changes you want?
Yeah, going down...is that why 7 has remotes from Hell?
Idaho's Noosechannel 7 K-Mayhem
We win awards for this crap!
What "bluff?"
Estimates of the speculator factor on the price of oil has been set at about $25 per barrel. That is a significant amount, but still has the cost over $100 if the speculator factor was zero.
And they are not "crazed" unless they are knowingly not making money. Speculation fuels much in capitalism.
New Orleans was indeed a major player in domestic supply. Many of our southern coastal fields were shut down or disrupted. That is why we need further development of our coastal fields, ANWR, and other diversified locations so that production can be picked up in one area should there be a slowdown in another.
My point is simple math. A barrel today is about $130, cut that in half to the date it was $65...and check the price of gas per gallon on that date. You'll find it has not doubled in the same time.
I'm sorry but this logic just died. Try something else.
I'm not into it today. Thanks for writing.
Making it easy
AAA reported today that gas at the pump was 20% higher than Memorial Day weekend last year.
Oil per barrel has more than doubled in the same time.
Making it real.
Oil was $133 a barrel so it looks like prices for gas are in line with oil, hedging included. Whose numbers should we use?
Where do you want to start, I'm sure the numbers & comparisons change from year to year. If I recall, gas was about .25 a gallon in the early seventies, oil was around $12 a barrel. The demand wasn't the same, more than enough to go around because other nations weren't using as much. You can bet we used to waste more in every way imaginable too. $105 divided by 12 =8.75 & .25 x 8.75=$2.18 a gallon. I messed up the math in the earlier post, had it at $3 a gal. Could oil companies really raise gas & diesel prices at the same rate as oil? People are screaming as it is. What's the dollar worth in comparison? If the dollar is down, worth less than the early seventies, doesn't that have to be factored in?
What will a dollar buy today compared to 1972? Same as with oil & the cost involved in drilling, refining & the whole mess. Is it cheaper to drill & refine a barrel than it was in 1972, better more efficient methods? I don't think you can just say gas is so much & oil is so much & those are the final numbers, end all. Wages, add the CEO's, & minimum wage today compared to 1972, & average mpg cars get, & all kinds of numbers.
Where do you begin & where does it end? I don't think it's a perfect science. Solutions rather than continued failure might help. How much has changed in DC? Seems it's going the other way. I don't see that the people we elect have the knowledge to run the country, they get voted in based on $, contributions. How much can they come up with & when corporations contribute to each of the two parties, they win no matter what. Do We the People? If we vote somebody into office who has no real knowledge of so many things, bills, thousands of pages are introduced, these people couldn't possibly read & understand it all, pass legislation & laws, what do we get? You can bet the people & corporations which contribute, tell these representatives of ours what they want them to know, so bills & laws are passed based on ?
I wouldn't doubt if a very high percentage of bill are passed, representatives believing they know what they are voting on while in fact they have been misled. Campaign finance!
