Should local musicians play Alive After Five?

Well, should they?

It's an annual debate that I purposely avoided in today’s Scene column about Alive After Five. In the past, nothing BUT local bands played the free weekly bash at The Grove. Beginning in 2005, the Downtown Boise Association began hiring out-of-state acts in an effort to revitalize the party. Simply put, Boiseans weren’t turning out in droves anymore to see the same groups they can see any time at bars or weddings.

Should Alive After Five book local acts again?

It’s not an easy question. In recent years, a handful of vocal musicians have made a stink about it. I have no problem with anyone who argues that area bands should be booked – in fact, I agree that they could be booked on a limited basis. (More on that in a moment.) What drives me nuts is when certain indignant musicians become unpleasant and territorial about the disagreement, as if they’re entitled to play Alive After Five. Calling for a boycott of Alive After Five is not the right way to approach this issue. (Yes, a couple of local bands actually suggested that last year.) And let's face it: LOTS of Boiseans are obviously pleased with the touring bands being booked. It's fun to see new music. And there are definitely diehard fans of proven acts such as Asylum Street Spankers or Pato Banton.

Certainly, there are many local acts plenty talented enough to play Alive After Five. However, if they’ve oversaturated themselves by gigging too much in the Valley, the DBA has to consider whether Boiseans will be lured to Alive After Five. Raising money is one of the goals, so the DBA needs to attract lots of people. And let’s face yet another fact: Although most area musicians are realistic, upstanding citizens, there will always be a few who are delusional about their talent and/or drawing power.

I’d recommend that the DBA consider booking two or three local acts at the beginning of each year: 1) It would make local musicians happy and give them a chance to perform. 2) Boiseans will turn out for the first few Alive After Fives no matter who's playing, simply because they’re excited summer is here. 3) Almost every year, it seems like we get a rainout that forces Alive After Five indoors at the start of the season. No offense to local musicians, but it’s less devastating for a Boise band to get moved indoors than for an out-of-state act that traveled 500 miles thinking it would get to play for — and sell merchandise to — 3,000 people at The Grove.

Those are my thoughts. What are yours about this issue?

Mix it Up.

Problem with out of town bands is the "who are they" syndrome. If I have never heard of the band and do not know what type of music they play, it is certainly not a draw for me.

Local bands are going to be more likely of a draw. If nothing more than friends and family.

If they want to increase numbers I suggest the Boise and closely surrounding area. No need to bring in a garage band from Portland. Let's keep it IDA Ho at least.

Look around downtown on a Wednesday evening

The trouble with local bands attracting friends and family is that it doesn't hold a candle to the thousands of people this new booking strategy has brought downtown on Wednesday nights. For proof of concept simply walk around downtown during or immediately after AAF, and what you'll find is half a dozen or more local music acts who now have work performing for AAF overflow crowds (sometimes in restaurants or bars that don't have music on any other night) and people who decide to stay downtown afterward. By crafting a weekly music festival that's got reliable novelty and diversity more people attend, and those crowds have created more demand for local acts in neighboring venues. Everybody wins.

THERE'S YOUR PROBLEM!

Live music is too expensive for many bars and restaurants anymore and karaoke has become a pain for the owners who feel that it's no sustitute and may actually DECREASE patronage.

What's left is pool and dart leagues and travel is again the kink in the road. It doesn't work in an restaurant anyway. I tend to believe that since the limosines at Club 7 stop off here in the vicinity of my neighborhood in Ontario so often, they should open a bar here. That must be expensive,

AAF overall

Good point Overtrick.
Rising tides raise all boats.

GOOD musicians should always play.

It's like telling me to get bananas from Filer.

out of town bands good for Boise music scene

My vote is for more of the excellent touring bands they have had the past few years with a few good (key word= good) local bands thrown in the mix.

I prefer living musicians to deceased--rip it up.

Para bailar de Boise

Why can't we do both ?

I always thought that it was possible to do both, put on a local band at 4 or 4:30 and have them play during breaks of the main act. I agree with Deeds, it's cool to discover new sounds and when you don't know much about a band it can really surprise you. I think the problem with (but not all) local acts is that there seems to be an overload of " heavy " music that really isn't what alive after five is going for. I think more people will come to check out something new, I love local acts, LOVE THEM but we do have quite a few local venues where you can go see them just about anytime you want.
Just my 2cents...And have you actually tried the bananas from Filer ?

There's a cut-rate grocery here CALLED Bananas...

there aren't any but yesterday I noted a phalanx of empty banana BOXES in the back area of the store...

I like music...

I like music, local music as well as music from neighboring tribes...I agree with the person that said let the bands take turns. Also let Alive after 5:00 last a little longer say 11:00 P.M. or midnight. I get off work at 7:00. Summer is a great time to get out and enjoy the city. I like a sampling...Maybe we should network with other cities doing the same thing and do a band exchange like a student exchange and see what happens...Anything that gets people up and out and moving is a good thing!!

Tribes?

Do the Cleveland ballplayers sing okay?

How about ALICE after five?

Maybe the Eagle or J105 can look into this...
