Conservation group proposes wolf-watching areas
Submitted by Zimo on Wed, 05/14/2008 - 7:08am.
The Idaho Department of Fish and Game is taking comments on proposed wolf-hunting rules until Friday.
There's a different twist developing. Some Idahoans want wolf-viewing areas.
It makes sense. You're not going to see wolves with bullets flying in all directions.
As Fish and Game proposes wolf hunting areas and quotas, it should also designate wolf-viewing areas where wolves will not be hunted, said the Idaho Conservation League.
The conservation organization says twice as many Idahoans watch wildlife as hunt, and the number is growing.
"We need opportunities for everyday Idahoans who want to watch wolves in the wild and prefer 'catch and release' shooting with a camera instead of a rifle, the organization said in a press release.
I've been trying to get a photo of a wolf for about five years without success. My chances are going to get worse with a hunting season.
Wolf-viewing areas need to be separate from hunting areas, according to the Idaho Conservation League.
Here's a list of areas ICL would like designated for wolf viewing:
- Bear Valley area near the boater put-in for the Middle Fork of the Salmon River. Aside from Yellowstone's renowned Lamar Valley, this is one of the few open areas in the West where Idahoans have a good chance of seeing wolves and there are no conflicts with livestock.
- Sawtooth National Recreation Area. The SNRA was established by Congress in 1972 to preserve and protect fish and wildlife, among other values, which makes it a perfect destination for wolf viewing. Because there are also livestock interests in the area, Fish and Game needs to make sure ranchers have the flexibility they need to avoid conflicts.
- The highway corridor from the SNRA to Challis and from Stanley to Lowman. The meadows and slopes along this corridor are already ideal for watching elk and deer, and hunting is not appropriate from these highways.
Photographers and wildlife watchers should contact Idaho Fish and Game with their comments. For more information, contact John Robison at jrobison@wildidaho.org or 345-6933, ext. 13.

This is already in the wolf
This is already in the wolf draft plan. But they don't seem to be talking much about it. I emailed Michael Lucid (IDFG biologist) asking where a person could go to watch wolves and take pictures of them, he would not give any ideas as to where I could go to see them. I think right now they could care a less about wildlife viewing areas, they want to get on with the hunting of wolves. But remember these wolf viewing areas would have to be places that you could access all the time. I very much doubt that you will be able to get back into Bear Valley until June this year with all the snowfall we have had. In short I think they are going to just about have to make these wildlife viewing areas a refuge or a park of some sorts, other wise people will be hunting in those areas.
People won't be hunting
People won't be hunting wolves except in the fall, you can view wolves in spring and summer possibly winter in some areas. That leaves most of the year for viewing with no "special" areas needed. We hear all the time how hunters just need to "work harder" instead of whining about not being able to find elk. Same holds true here, if you want to see a wild wolf you're going to have to work for it. We don't have black bear viewing areas or cougar viewing areas. Idaho isn't a park like Yellowstone
You said it right!
Very good Point!!!!
Go to a zoo
Do we have any "elk viewing areas"?
Any "coyote viewing areas"?
And yes, we already have a wolf viewing area. It's called Yellowstone, just like you mention in your post.
Five years without a wolf picture Zimo? Wow, what kind of an environmentalist are you?
ICL needs to get on with life and worry about more important things.
If you really want to see a wolf in the WILD it should include everything the wild includes- that competition from predators, traffic, weather, and timing.
Live Like the Romans
People like the pro-wolf extremists in the Lamar Valley of West Yellowstone who get their jollies off by watching through their high powered cameras and telescopes waiting to see an innocent deer or elk savagely torn apart and eaten alive by wolves are sick, demented people who belong back in the Roman Era in the coliseums where the same like minded people cheered at the lions eating the slaves alive.
My idea to appease these sick, demented people is to build a large fenced-in compound for the wolves and let these like minded folks turn out poor unsuspecting wildlife- so then can watch first hand, up close and personal, the animal being savagely and brutally torn apart and eaten alive. This way they could get their true money's worth and be guaranteed the action that they so desperately need.
You watch wildlife shows...?
You know you watch mating porn, you devil you.
How stupid
You know, I have thought that people who hunt and complain about wolves are getting hysterical about nothing for the most part..
Then I read stupid stuff like this " A conservation group wants wolf VIEWING areas ".. what a pile of idiots. It makes me understand that the hunters main concern is actually the morons who know nothing about wild life in general, yet proclaim to care in some way.
A wolf viewing area indeed.. oh yea, we should spend some money on that. Maybe they can take up a collection at the C0-OP and come up with some funds, or people willing to do the work, or anything for that matter. Maybe they can have a meeting with the wolves and let them know that there is a Yuppy segment of the population out there that feels a need to view them at their leisure. They seemed to have missed that memo to date. I suggest they drive their Range Rovers ( after stopping for a smoothie ) to a secluded spot on the green belt and have a drum circle.. do a few chants.. and pat each other on the back because of all the Obama signs they have stuck in their yards up in the Highlands..
If you hire guides...
there will be cries that all the work goes to illegals.
Yada flipflop bing cherries
Idiotic idea...
If you want to view a wolf, Get out of your Subaru and GO HIKING!!!! I get sick and tired of the wolf huggers giving hunters a hard time and calling them lazy!!!
Put them out WAY AHEAD!
HEE HEE
We'll protect you, DON'T WORRY! ;-pppppp
You know thats funny right
You know thats funny right there, I am no wolf hugger. I like wolves and would love to see some. I am a big game hunter and have yet to see a wolf in Idaho. I guess all you people that laugh at the idea of a wildlife watching area have never been to yellowstone or don't have a clue at the money that is generated from people wanting to watch wildlife. I hike plenty, I don't own an ATV. I am able to fill my tags every year and yes there are wolves in the area I hunt. Seen lots of tracks. I would even love to see grizzlies re-introduced to central Idaho.
Let's hear it for conservation!!
I don't hunt, but I'm with you Photoguy. There is a LOT of money in conservation in general and it's clearly in the long-term interests of Idaho. We could learn a little by taking a look at Vermont vrs. New Hampshire: one is deep into conservation, the other "developed." Which one do the tourists pick...
A backpacker
Bon Voyage
Enjoy your trip to Vermont & New Hampshire.
There's also a lot of money in beef, sheep, elk, deer and not having legal battles.
I hope all of these idiotic groups will be endanged soon..
I don't care who or what they support anymore.
lamo
when you go out and kill an animal and you have it on your wall you sit down in your leather chair with wine by the fire place when looking up at the animal does it ever occur to you that the animal once had a family and you feel bad? I know you don’t care. Hunting destroys families. If killing people is illegal then killing animals should be illegal. If you love to kill animals then why own an animal. You don’t deserve one. their wont be a season on wolves this fall why can't you get that through your hillbilly mind. the law suit will pass i beat and wolves will be relisted and F&G can't do anything about it. i don't support beef as the wolves get killed for cattle and i don't support beef because of it.
Buffalo Jump
South of Challis is a cliff near the highway where the Native Americans forced buffalo over the cliff. They next gutted them out and preserved the meat. A BIG celebration was held. Snarling and fighting predators gobbled the gut and waste meat piles.
Let's re-enact the buffalo jump!
The sickos who like to watch deer and elk ripped apart alive by the wolves will get their jollies from the buffalo going over the cliff.
Idaho Tourism Dept. will have a tremendous attraction. And think of the lots of money for film rights.
P.S. In the 1800's wolf poisoners baited the meat with such strong poison that the wolves died from the poison while eating the meat. The wolf pelts were sold without any bullet or arrow holes in them and at a higher price. The wolf poisoning also can be recreated after a buffalo jump for more revenues.
just like how you get your
just like how you get your jollies off of killing helpless game not just for food but for the massive egos.you sportsman rednecks are no different then a wolf. you wouldn't be tim sundles little buddy i hope.
