The wilderness bills: Where the candidates stand

Sen. Mike Crapo's Owyhee wilderness bill headed for a possible Senate vote in June. (Click here for the story, and here for the Crapo press release).

With that news, here's where the candidates in Idaho's contested May 27 Senate and congressional primaries stand on Idaho's wilderness bills — the Owyhee bill, and Rep. Mike Simpson's Boulder-White Clouds bill.

U.S. Senate, Republicans:

• Fred Adams, Idaho Falls. Opposes new wilderness bills.

• Brian Hefner, Sweet. Opposes additional wilderness.

• Bill Hunter, Rexburg. No position on the bills, but says federal government controls too much land.

• Richard Phenneger, Coeur d'Alene. Has not looked closely at Owyhees bill, but says he conceptually agrees with the proposal.

• Jim Risch, Boise. Supports both bills.

• Scott Syme, Wilder. Supports a balanced approach to wilderness, and calls the Owyhees bill a great example of bringing together stakeholders. If the Boulder-White Clouds bill has consensus support, he says he'd support it.

• Neal Thompson, McCall. Opposes both bills, and says federal lands should be turned over to the states.

U.S. Senate, Democrats:

• Larry LaRocco, Boise. Supports both bills.

• Dave Archuleta, Fort Hall. In an interview last month, he said he has not read the bills.

First Congressional District, Republicans:

• Bill Sali, Kuna: Commends Crapo's work on the Owyhee bill. However, he wants to see money upfront for the bill's land transfers, and hard release language for lands not designated wilderness.

• Matt Salisbury, Nampa. Has concerns about the Owyhee bill. Specifically, he worries the bill would push ranchers off of public land.

Second Congressional District, Republicans:

• Jack Wayne Chappell, Buhl: Opposes both bills.

• Gregory Nemitz, Twin Falls: Says he needs to further study the bills.

• Mike Simpson, Boise: He has authored the Boulder-White Clouds bill, and supports the Owyhee bill.

Second Congressional District, Democrats:

• Deborah Holmes, Boise; Supports Boulder-White Clouds bill.

• David Sneddon, Boise. Supports. Calls the Owyhee bill "genius," and says, if elected, he would continue pushing the Boulder-White Clouds bill.

Notably missing - Minnick.

Couldn't get a hold of him? Didn't want to comment?
Kevin, please contact and update.
Thanks,

What if we all DIDN'T vote for him?

Couldn't make the effort Kevin?

Don't you think there's a little interest by the public on this issue Mr. Rihert? Or are you too lazy? Just like Rocky Barker.

At this point ...

our focus is on the contested primaries, and interviewing and scrutinizing responses from the 70-plus candidates who are running in them.

Hey, isn't this the little guy on American Idol????

I would probably be correct in thinking...

relatively few, if any of them are standing in a wilderness at any time.
