Bush fights Republicans to cut farm welfare for rich
Submitted by Rocky Barker on Tue, 05/06/2008 - 7:56am.
President George Bush is having a hard time keeping the farm bill from busting the budget.
What makes Bush’s farm bill budget battle interesting is he is not just fighting farm state Democrats. He’s battling Republicans who want the federal government to keep giving farm subsidies to rich farmers.
So what is a rich farmer?
Under the Senate compromise bill the adjusted gross income cap for farmers would be $950,000. That means farmers making more than that still could still get what former House Speaker Bruce Newcomb, a farmer and subsidy beneficiary himself called, “welfare.”
Bush wants to set the income cap at $200,000.
All of Idaho’s Republican delegation supports the higher cap. Remember last year when Rep. Bill Sali made a big deal out of how the bill to provide health benefits for children would make eligible some families in New York with incomes up to $62,000?
Bush, who shared that view, at least is consistent.
“Its not the right time to ask American families who are already paying more in the checkout line to pay more in subsidies for wealthy farmers,” Bush said.
So why do Idaho’s conservative congressmen support farm subsidies for rich farmers?
In 2005 Idaho farmers got $79 million in crop subsidies and farm businesses got a total of $40 million.

time I agree with Bush. How these subsidies for the rich ever got started should be investiagted. Oops.....I'm being silly! Of course the rich are getting more tax breaks than anyone else....duh! Just imagine how the people who REALLY need some tax relief would feel if they actually got what they're missing. Oops....being silly again!
To qualify for a farm subsidy, the applicant SHOULD have to prove an income FROM THE FARM of under $150,000. No more tax breaks for the rich & famous.
At one time we had a livable wage in this country which allowed those who worked hard to live comfortably.
Alas, those are the "good 'ol days" and now we suffer. I think its called GREED.

AWESOME!
Bush is trying

to start a legacy, for himself. Now is as good as time as any I guess. However, I can't believe he is really trying to keep the millionaire farmers from their welfare. This has got to be a misprint. Like Widestance and dollar Bill Sali, they will say anything now to get recognition. They just don't understand that we see right through them and their ways. Wake up, and get out, your time is just about done here.
I've been trying to figure out his angle as well.

What is the real plan, how is Bush going to benefit from this? Mineral rights, drilling for oil someplace, mining, logging, or just where is the motivation?
Watched a Doc. on HW Bush last night & many things became obvious. Most of all, Dubya has been trying to fill shoes & failing miserably for his entire life, until the war in Iraq.
Can't take much away from a man like HW who didn't have to sign up, go to war, fly all those missions, flight deck landings, shot down, & accomplish as much as he did. The family was into many things, banking, & HW evidently proved himself again in oil exploration after the service. Junior was a skull too, didn't shine in the military as dad did, didn't find any oil the way HW did, had to start a war to find it or at east profit from it.
Dubya is doing something similar to dad again in illegal immigration. HW came out in support of equal rights, support of the Black man fighting in war to defend America. A rightous tool to get minorities the same respect as everyone else. Strange the GOP was anti union as it still is today. I guess it's ok to work anybody, black or white, long hours for low pay if they're willing & fooled so easily so long as contributors make their $. Dubya comes out with, Americans won't do those jobs in promoting illegal immigration for cheap labor while union busting & HW did the same while supporting the Black man. Like father like son?
Took a wise man to recognize putting Black veterans to work at minimum wage was good for his political career while busting unions, helping contributors, & making them feel equal in every respect. I wonder if HW whispered into Dubya's ear? I can hear it now, "son, if you bust the unions & bring in illegal immigrants to do jobs Americans used to do for a living wage, you'll fool everyone, get the contributions, just like I did, & make out like a bandit."
I wonder why HW didn't whisper into junior's ear when it came to war? $$$? Funny how people suggest oil companies didn't double gas prices when oil doubled. I looked at some oil & gas history on the internet & that arguement doesn't hold water. In approximately 1980 when oil went up to $68 a barrel, {Iraq & Iran war} gas went to approximately $2.25 a gallon. $68 x 2 =$136 a barrel. Oil was right at $120 the other day & how much is gas, $3.60 a gallon? Add $16 to a barrel of oil & how much would gas be? Might not double but it isn't too much off the mark. Diesel is another story. Diesel is at $4.18 national average making it more than double if it were less than a gallon of gas back in 1980.
I'm not sure what diesel cost in 1980 but I remember a time when diesel was less than gas. Is gas refined from oil or oil refined from gas? If gas is refined from oil & diesel is the by-product, why is diesel more expensive than gas when it used to be cheaper?
All those SUVs, cars, & pickups the auto industry designed to burn diesel brought out the greed in that the by-product couldn't be allowed to slip away at that bargain price? Now that all the diesel we need to transport goods is also in great demand in other areas, in competition with transportation I guess we need to raise the price & force the price of our goods up while creating inflation. Add to this a war in which we used billions of gallons of fuel & oil when the oil man who started the war says we need to break our addiction to oil & we have a conflict of interest? Say it ain't so, not the presdient, not the republican party?
Looks like Dubya found more $ in oil than HW did.
Out of a barrel of oil, the retail price we paid for a gallon of regular gas in January 2008 was ?, taxes 13%, distribution & marketing 11%, refining 8%, & crude oil 68%.
Do I know exactly what all the numbers mean? If I were an oil man I would. In 2005 oil was up to $60 a barrel & gas $2.34 so it is true that gas hasn't doubled, it isn't $4.68 a gallon at $120 a barrel. Diesel is $4.20 & diesel price has more effect on the price of goods. Add that $16 to the price of oil to get $136 a barrel & where is the cost of diesel? What is the cost of your groceries.
If I lived in a state where there is sales tax on groceries while Congress passed a $260 billion farm bill, I might be asking why. When the same guy, the president who started this war is suggesting cutting the welfare to corporate farming, my guess would be that it's just the same old shell game. Politics, the two party joke democracy has become which terrorist are using as their ally, the best weapon they have to defesat US. Campaign fincance?
I'm no expert, don't know much about the oil business, & all these charts/numbers, but you can bet Dubya does. Doesn't it seem a little strange that as President, an oil man who promoted this war in Iraq, an oil rich country which when at war with Iran in 1980 when oil went to $60 a barrel, is telling US we need to break our addiction to oil? Shell game?
No? Just me? It's a good thing I'm not in charge of investigating the oil & gas prices. I'd be dead by now. I would think there are enough people in America fed up with the lies, losing family to a war with no end in sight while our economy is in the crapper, & getting worse, people who might wake up, stand up, & force an investigation. Demand full financial disclosure by all our representatives going back to free trade, NAFTA.
Guess not. It's a good thing we have history, the American Revolution to fall back on. It'll never happen again, not in this life. May as well read about it or watch the history channel, it's as close as we'll ever get to We the People as written in the constitution.
Tear it up republicans, let me have it. I'm sure I'm all wrong & my name isn't on it, doesn't mean a thing. Republican, democrat, no difference, the two parties terroist use to their advantage in the defeat of America. Are we promoting democracy in Iraq or is democracy the downfall of America being used by terrorist in a war people didn't want to have fought here at home? War doesn't have to be fought in your back yard to have a devastating impact, not if your elected representatives are profitting much the same as Saddam was.
