Iraq War vets challenge GOP favorites
Submitted by Jasper LiCalzi on Thu, 05/01/2008 - 9:13am.
After every war in the history of our country, veterans have returned home and continued to serve their country in elected office. From George Washington to George Herbert Walker Bush, presidents have been drawn from the ranks of the active duty military with John McCain trying to join that list this year. The Iraq War veterans are beginning to serve in Congress as a few were elected in 2006. More, around a dozen, are running for Congress this year. Idaho has followed the lead of other parts of the country with two Iraq War veterans running for Congress this year against better known opponents in the GOP primary.
Scott Syme is one of a large group of Republicans who hope to get their party’s nomination to replace Sen. Larry Craig. Lt. Gov. Jim Risch is the favorite due to his endorsements by prominent party leaders, state-wide name recognition and a large lead in cash on hand. Despite these disadvantages, Syme may have a shot in this race, especially if he can distinguish himself as the clear alternative to Risch from amongst the slew of other candidates. (I should disclose that one of my students is working for the Syme campaign and Scott is himself an alumnus of The College of Idaho, but then one of my former students works for Risch so I have connections to both sides).
Syme started out as an enlisted man on active duty in the U.S. Army but now holds the rank of colonel in the reserves. As an old enlisted guy, I always found the officers who had first served in the enlisted ranks to be the best commanders since they didn’t look down on us enlisted slobs simply because we had stripes on our sleeves. Syme is running a grass-roots campaign with a large number of volunteers who are working very hard. The campaign is starting to send out comparison pieces in the mail that are rubbing some people the wrong way. That tells me Syme is starting to make an impact but he has a long way to go in the next three weeks if he is going to “shock the world” and win this primary.
Matt Salisbury is taking on incumbent Bill Sali for the GOP nomination for the First Congressional District in the U.S. House. Salisbury comes from a military family (he was born in Germany where his father was stationed) and also began as an active duty enlisted man and has moved onto the reserves. When Salisbury was on active duty, he was an Airborne Ranger. As an Air Force fly boy who spent his time in the military behind a desk, I am always impressed with real soldiers. Though not a College of Idaho graduate (I won’t hold it against Matt that he went to NNU), Salisbury has lived in Canyon County for his whole non-military life and is ingrained in the community. He is more involved in the Republican Party than Syme but Salisbury is not the choice of the party. It seems he “hasn’t waited his turn” and “is not running in the right race” with the implication being that he should be running for a state or local position. That is the way it is with those Rangers, they don’t always wait for the safe time to act.
I will not use this blog to endorse candidates (not that anyone would care much for my blessing anyway). I merely want to bring to your attention two young men who you should consider due to their prior commitment and service to our country. The favorites have not served in the military for their own reasons. Syme and Salisbury volunteered when their country needed them and they served honorably. Even if you don’t vote for these two veterans (and I don’t know if I will or not), please go to their Web sites, look at their positions and give them the consideration they deserve.
Go Yotes.

Syme's family is the one that founded McKnight and Syme...
later Syme Electric which is based in the western Treasure Valley serving Payette, Weiser and Malheur Counties. Electricians in this area are some of the longest-lived service businesses around (I can name three off the top of my head--Jangula's, Fruitland Electric and Syme) and from my observations the kids tend to be well focused and work hard, for what it's work. Electrical work and military service often lend a good character to a person--they require honesty and discipline to be accepted.
Other than that you just have to meet them I guess. Nobody votes FOR you unless you're dead in Chicago!
Good topic
I have been solid for Risch for several reasons but then received a Syme flyer in the mail. It was very well done and made his case to the point of me giving him serious consideration.
I doubt that he will "shock the world" and I will likely still vote for Risch, but it is good that this new generation of leaders is making itself known.
Reading your short piece on Ranger Salisbury being born in Germany reminded me of the McCain "natural birth" (smile) question, that seems to have died out. Any chance the Dems are waiting to go to the Supreme Court in an October surprise to get him declared ineligible? Or has the question been answered sufficiently?
As a child of a US citizen, soldier and already scrutinized...
and approved over a month ago by the state's election commission, NOT TO MENTION THAT ONLY APPLIES TO THE OVAL OFFICE, your attempt at brevity is wasted.
Thank you for writing.
McCain is only running for the Oval Office
A state election commission probably would not hold sway over the Supreme Court, but which state approved him?
I suspect the issue has died out, but in Presidential politics you just never know.
I am confused on your comment regarding "brevity" being wasted. I wrote as much as I wanted to.
Confusion...
is a great 1979 tune by ELO and found on the album, "Discovery". It was released worldwide as a single and also was an early example of a well-produced video clip for the song. Virtually all the album's cuts were made into video versions for an early concept video album, of which most of those videos and several of their other clips exist on You Tube at this time for viewing.
Ball of Confusion is a classic soul song
Ball and Chain is by Janis Joplin. I believe Big Brother and the Holding Company backed her.
Chain of Fools is one of Aretha Franklin's biggest hits.
Aretha once shared a duet with George Michael who seems to be a one-man Hamlet.
Hamlet has never been played, to my knowledge, by KEVIN BACON.
Send em to war
Prior military (or civil service for the flat footed) ought to be a requirement for President and Congressmen.
Risch? No. His sons? No.
Sali? Yeah right!
Fight the Power!
Military requirements for President and Congress
I have often thought the same thing. I certainly worked with some officers and NCO's who consistently made better decisions than what we often get from many of our elected officials - and they had served, and been in harm's way.
But.....there is something very safe about having civilian control over our government at the highest levels. Even though we're talking about "former" military people, we are one country that has not seen a coup.
It's the same reason we have lay boards - non doctors on hospital boards, non teachers on school boards, non pilots on the airport boards, etc. We really value the "no entangling alliances" idea for our government.
But emotionally, UP, I'm right there with you more often than not. And I will take second looks at these two candidates.
Not making the military connection at all.
Military service has it's merits for building character or morale but it's no indicator of how one will lead a nation.
Not ever considering the Vietnam generation currently here or running.
Truman served in WW I and people have been lukewarm to negative on him for over 55 years. James Earl Carter, Jr doesn't exactly roll easily off the tongue when reading a list of fine leaders with military experience. Lyndon Johnson? Had more stature after he grew a ponytail or something and went off lecturing and whatever. Memory is a funny thing!
How one will lead
You are exactly right. General Ike was basically competent as present, JFK died too soon for a good analysis of his leadership over time, President Carter was a failed president, Bush I was voted out of office after one year, and Bush II, while in fact a veteran has a slippery record of actual service. And we will likely never know if Colin Powell would have been a succesful one.
My point to UdP, was the difference between my "emotional" thoughts of sometimes wishing the President or more national leaders had more understanding of the military - and my "intellectual" thoughts of understanding why we have no such requirement and the enduring stability of our government with civilian control of our military.
I think too that in the military it is easier to serve one mission and one master, than as President serving and pleasing 360 million of each - just in the U.S., and then there's the rest of world.
One TERM.
One died at less than a year and of course that was the first time the succession rules were used.
Gee it was around 1841 but it doesn't hit my memory as to whom.
Exactly So, FO!
This notion that our leader needs to be a military person is creepy.
Send the Whole Squad to DC!
It may very well take this whole squad of Iraq Veterans for Congress to put Our Country back on track. They are more than qualified proven leaders dedicated to putting service to Our Country above self-service - - that alone is a refreshing point. They are also academically qualified - a real bonus!
There are over a dozen REPUBLICAN Iraq Veterans in Congressional Campaigns nationwide. They are new to the political scene and few will discribe themselves as "politicians." www.iraqvetsforcongress.com
Many had a hand in assisting the new Iraq Government, many saw the pride in the Iraqi people as they voted in their first free election. Heck - the people of Iraq had a larger voter turnout than we did here in the USA in the 04 & the 06 elections. The Iraqi people have displayed a very strong passion for freedom - the kind of passion our Military have for Our Country.
Matt Salisbury is NOT accepting "special interest group" contributions for his campaign. His opponants are.
So, who is the most likely to listen to WE THE PEOPLE OF IDAHO? And who WILL serve the interests of Idahoans?
Yep, Salisbury - the 4th generation Idahoan.
Have you met him yet? Have you asked him questions? Have you visited his website? www.salisburyforidaho.org
Hmm
First, there is no natural birth question for McCain. There is a law that says people born in Panama to American parents is considered a natural-born US citizen for legal purposes. So, there you go.
Second, I'm very unconvinced that military service provides the kind of preparation for office that I'd want in my leaders. I find the gendered world-view very persuasive, and ultimately the military is the most hegemonicly masculine organization you'll find outside of gangs and the prison system. I don't want a leader, at any level, who is used to thinking about problems in military ways and solving them in military ways; it just leads to war. Not to mention that for many veterans of the most recent Iraq war, they've shown their ability to follow morally specious orders that they don't agree with because its somehow their "duty." I vastly prefer elected officials that have never served in the armed forces for those reasons.
Warriors are Anti War
I think you would find John McCain and John Kerry would be the two least likely to solve things the "military way" and they, like many other 'experienced' vets have the backbone to stand up for what is right.
It started with George Washington.
But you have the right to your opinion, even when it is wrong.
And you have that right thanks in part to that hegemonically (spelled with 2 'l's BTW) masculine organization that you think provides inadequate leadership.

kstein, your post makes me think of a scene from a popular movie:
"We use words like honor, code, loyalty. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punchline! I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it! I would rather you just said, "Thank you," and went on your way. Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a weapon and stand a post. Either way, I don't give a damn what you think..."
Why Salisbury
He is a 4th generation resident of Nampa Idaho - graduated from the same high school, and college (NNU) as his parents and grand parents did.
He knows first hand the struggles of small businesses in Idaho - he founded a small business here too.
He knows first hand the financial struggles of Idahoans attending college - he worked full time while attending NNU where he received his Bachelor's Degree in Political Science.
He knows the meaning of Selfless Service to others. He inlisted in the US Army became a member of the Rangers and experienced 1st hand the birth of a free nation of Iraq. Several years after his stint in the US Army he inlisted in the Idaho Guard. He SAW people risk their lives to vote in Iraq's first free election.
In Matt's Selfless Service he created and coaches youth soccer teams. Helping our Idaho youth learn that working together as a team can be both fun and rewarding. He makes the time to volunteer in his community in many way - from walking door-to-door collecting food to to managing the funds of the county GOP.
Matt Salisbury received his Masters Degree in International Diplomacy with an emphasis on Economics. He has excelled in his work with International Businesses for major companies in Idaho.
Matt and his wife Chandra have three young children. As a young family they too experience many of the same frustrations that other young families in Idaho are experiencing. As a parent, he wants his children - and all children - to receive the best education possible and affordable health care. As parents we choose which doctors we want to care for our children - shouldn't we as parents also be able to choose which schools and teachers we want to educate our children?
Matt sees the challenges facing Idaho's elderly citizens. He listens to the issues the eldery of his community, church, and family voice to him. He realizes that it won't be long before he too will face these issues - unless things change NOW. He knows that the issues our elderly face are not unique to Idaho - these are national issues. Matt will not ignore theses issues.
Matt Salisbury is a 4th generation Idahoan, a Veteran of the US Army and the Idaho Guard, a community volunteer, a husband, a father, a son, a grandson, a neighbor. He refuses to accept outside special interest money for his campaign beause outside interests are not Idaho's interests.
I think Matt Salisbury will be an excellent Congressman for Idaho District One. Military experience is far from the only experience that Matt Salisbury has to offer Idahoans.
I can can dig everything but that free nation of Iraq thing.
What are they free from anyway?
War Criminals
Any one who voted for and supported and continues to support this war in Iraq, should upon leaving office be charged as a war criminal. Including a soon to be ex president. Republicans get your heads out of the sand, war in the desert has been going on for over a thousand years and short of annihilating all the people of the Arab world you will never stop there Holey war. OPEC keeps raising the prise of crude and that in turn supports the terrorists.
So in reality by buying all the oil and gas
the American people are paying the insurgents to kill our Military personnel.
Oil companies are making huge profits at our expense, ask President Bush how much he and his family are making from the Oil. If the republicans are allowed st stay in power the war will never end. how many more bodies are we going to bring home, and encase any one is wondering I served my time in the Navy, which is more than I can say about the coward we have sending our troops to die. No guts no Glory, Mr President. The Bush administration is nothing more than a dictatorship, they have no respect for us Americans or any one else in the world, there agenda is all that counts. the high prices of goods will not stop, as long as dictators are in office, and until we bring our jobs back home from China and the Middle East.
War Criminals?
Thanks for your service in the Navy.
"if" we were to consider Bush guilty of war crimes we would truly have to also charge all senators and representatives who voted for the war, such as Clinton and Kerry. Since every month the Democratically controlled House and Senate approve the money for the war we would have to charge all of them who voted to approve.
And, as has been shown in previous war trials "following orders" is not a sufficient defense, we will also have to charge all of the military officers who participated in the "illegal" war, and then work our way down through the ranks. This would ultimately result in all deployed members of the Idaho National Guard being charged.
That might be a bit unwieldy.
The better choice would be to win the war that Islam declared against us in 2000. Avenge the USS Cole, avenge the attack on our native soil in 2001, and hunt down those who started and continue the war against us.
Exxon made a 7% profit in 2007, and paid $18 billion in taxes, employed many, many thousands of workers, and with its fellow energy companies help stabilize our economy during the housing and real estate downturn. We would be in a full-fledged recession without profitable energy companies right now.
Of course, the senate approved new oil exploration in the U.S. back in the 1990's and President Clinton vetoed the bill. The smart play today remains developing our coastal oil fields, ANWR, and improving relations with oil producing friends on this continent such as Mexico, and throughout Central and South America. We have truly mismanaged those relationships back through the last half-dozen Presidents.
Wait until he's gone and think a minute!
Who would replace him? What are you asking for? Can't you wait till we get a easier mess to deal with in office?
It's too late now. Don't distract a nation in it's most critical days, it's not helpful to America.
PS I'm sure you'd be in jail under your own qualifications?

Sorry, cellmate we'll see each other a while when Leavenworth is expanded across 4 states.
Politicians have an agenda & it has very little to do with
the average taxpayer making a decent living. Republicans will never change their opinion & democrats will always defend they're failure in following like whipped pups.
Terrorist are playing US through DC, representatives like Bush don't care while taxpayers are footing the bill, & dying to do so. The two party system that has US in this war is in need of an overhaul. Full financial disclosure & war crimes should a court find it the case. A court of the public/taxpayers, not representatives or judges appointed by the criminals. Never happen! That says a bunch, it's crooked from Congress, the Senate, courts, AG, & all the way to the White House. Executive privelege!
It's sad, obvious lunacy that media report all this bad/negative news & some people, republicans, continue to suggest what a wonderful life we live. Blinders? The best crooks never come clean, deny, deny, deny! When politicians appoint judges & AGs they have nothing to worry about. How is it that every administration has to spend millions on defense/lawyers at our expense? Our prisons are full of nonviolent criminals as well as violent & they're all innocent too?
In seven years Bush & co. have taken US from surplus to recession & it's all good? I don't think so. Full finacial disclosure by all our representatives back to NAFTA. Nothing to hide, no fear. Let's have it all made public, campaign contributions, from who to who, votes in Congress & Senate & how they relate to contributions. It's our country so lets have an accounting. Let's see the books, see the truth.
If any of our representatives were really representing US it seems they might put a cap on fuel prices for over the road trucks, airlines, rail, & steamships to hold down inflation but they do nothing as we spiral out of control. The entire world could get on board with transportation costs in airline & steamship but all sit by & do nothing. Bush was quick to war, after an attack. Why so slow to stop a recession, depression created through his war in a country that never attacked US? Just like 9/11, warned about it years in advance & do nothing? To make foolish adjustments such as war after the fact when it could have been avoided was wrong & waiting to solve our economic problems in hope they will solve themselves is wrong as well. Dragging it out with rate cuts & a stimulus we'll spend on foreign made products might bump China's economy but Americans are still losing jobs & the dollar is still weak.
Allowing our economic problems to compound while taxpayers go broke due to high fuel costs while family is in Iraq fighting a war based on lies & doing nothing about the cost of fuel in the transportation industry will only make inflation worse. The cost of fuel for our cars is nothing compared to the cost of delivering goods. We'll pay ten times over the increase in price of goods & they won't come back down, we'll always pay. We can cut our personal driving & waste, goods such as food will always have to be delivered. Eliminate sales tax on groceries, the farm bill is a tax before they hit the store. Farmers are doing better than they have in years, let them make it on the exporting through a weak dollar & a world in need of food & use the $ from the farm bill where we need it now.
There are a couple ideas, cap fuel prices on transportation, use $ from the farm bill other than corproate welfare, & eliminate sales tax on groceries. Those ideas alone would be a positive move in stopping inflation & allowing taxpayer relief. Why hasn't Bush, Congress, & the Senate done anything in these areas. They fight back & forth over party yet allow taxpayers of both parties to go broke. Is that representation? They'll bail out banking with taxpayer $, support corporate welfare through a farm bill, but sit by & watch the taxpayer who pay for these things go broke one at a time?
Bush claims to stop corporate welfare in not supporting the farm bill which is obviously a cover for all his other failures. It's politics. Democrats fail in their support of the farm bill while claiming the war is the problem. How about they all quit doing what's best for their party & do what's best for America? The farm bill is a joke just like the two parties & the war. We need an overhaul, clean house, & take the best weapon terrorist have out of DC! Can't continue to protect the institution, the White House, Congress, & Senate while they break US & survive as a nation.
War crimes, full disclosure, a real investigation! It would be a waste of time & money just like our representation because they would cover their lies at our expense
while America conitnues to fall apart. They don't care about America or Americans, just their money! Our representatives have to step up & they won't. Never happen in this dream land of denial. All the religion they go on about & they couldn't find the truth with both hands, a map, & a flashlight. The truth is buried next to a politician's greedy head, up that old dirt road.
The American people could stir it up but they won't. There are always a few who paint a pretty picture while other suffer & lose. It's all about the party not the country! Spending millions on the primaries, contributions that could be used for a country in need is just more proof that corporate welfare will be the victor while America the loser.
Quick to war - slow to fight the recession
The President is the Commander in Chief of the military - it is his job to defend our borders, and he acted quickly when we were attacked.
He is not the banker in chief. Our economy is dependent upon the 50 states and our territories doing their bit too. Grocery tax? There is no federal sales tax on groceries so there is nothing for Bush to cut. It is the job of our state to make that decision - and Idaho should.
Spending millions on primaries? That is fueling the economy. Those millions are going to print shops, restaurants, hotels, airlines, car rental agencies, advertising companies, etc. The campaigns are acting much as our stimulus package - except it is voluntary money rather than tax dollars - that's a good deal. Every one of those dollars spent helps some working person earn a salary.
A "court of the public and taxpayers" is exactly what happens in our election cycles. Politicians and hopefuls stand before us and we can put them in office with our trust, or snatch it away. It is the best form of "court of the public."
In our free market economy no one has a right to put a cap on fuel prices. Our forefathers threw tea in Boston harber to gain us the freedom from such government oppression. Yes gas is high - hurts me too - I'm parking the guzzler and driving the Honda whenever I can, which isn't fun since I'm a big guy....but our economy will work this out. Once we let the feds cap oil....they can socialize and control any product. That is a far greater fear than high prices.

that's funny!
Sorry I corrected mine right before you posted, yes it refers to greyghost's dissertation.
A good defense of the nation would have been
action years before 9/11 instead of playing golf. Defending the country would seem to suggest doing something when the warnings are there, years before an attack. If they knew about a commission, a report of possible use of commercial airliners as bombs I would think the Senate, Congress, & the President would have had a clue. Maybe defense of the nation doesn't start until after an attack?
It's amazing how fast a repulican will defend the failure of a republican President. Some people look around & see noting but good things because that's what they want to see. Open eyes see it all. There's that 14% & 25% appoval rating, the only percentage that counts? That tells the republican story, wrong 75% to 85% of the time all while thinking they're right.
We all know sales tax on groceries isn't a federal tax, some states do & some don't have sales tax on groceries. Idaho being a repulican state, we do! Stick together & all the failure will be fine. What some people have against reality & turn onto positive for the party is amazing. Republicans are failing, have been since Dubya took office. Write it anyway you want, surplus to recession in seven years. Do the math.
Living in denial isn't going to fix the economy which I have to believe falls to the cammander in chief as well. Bush's failed war along wit campaign finance & free trade caused all our economic problems. If I'm not mistaken Bush is all about the banking industry, hand in hand with the Fed he was all about a stimulus & Bear Sterns, or wasn't he? I guess he wasn't responsible but went out of his way to solve the problem?
What a man, didn't have to as President by stepped up any way?
Maybe Bush should focus on his war & forget the bank & economy. Is that what you suggest? It isn't the President's business? Maybe you should do a reality check. The President is in up to his failing best with nobody else to blame, unless he isn't man enough to accept the responsibility that goes with the job. It's obvious the repbulican party isn't up to the task. Lying, painting it all a rose, & making up excuses isn't going to solve the problems we face.
I think you've summed up the republican party incompetence, lack of ability, & willingness to shirk responsibility for all their failure. It's time to step aside. Next time we vote, I suggest we don't send a boy. All you get is excuses with no responsibility for failure. Real men stand up & accept responsibility when they fail, all Bush does is make up more lies, start wars, kill innocent people, & torture. Is that the America we all grew up to believe in. Republicans & democrats who don't have the sand to stand up to them while on our payroll for doing a job they're paid to do are failing & the country is prospering in your eyes. Maybe they're a little crossed.
I can hear the excuses now. They used our planes to attack US? They hit the World Trade Center? Everybody on the planet knew it was happening before Bush had a clue. Commander in Chief, that's a hoot. According to Bush, major fighting was over four years ago so why aren't we out of Iraq, playing golf? According to Bush it would only cost $50 billion? According to Bush we're not in a reccession either.
There are a lot of things we could do to curb a recession, even if it isn't up to the failure in chief who would use excuses & blame others before taking responsibility while shirking his. No wonder America is in a tail spin, our leader still hasn't been told. Do the rest of the republicans think everything is just dandy too? Might want to read a peper or listen to the news, catch up on current affairs. If it doesn't interfer with the golf game or reality.
Do you have any idea how rediculous it is to suggest the election cycle is the court? Four or six years after a failure it's time to make an adjustment to correct? Did the last presidencial election fix the mess we face today? Sorry but the President, Congress, & the Senate have the ability to act on anything in the interest of the country. Isn't the stimulus an action, the bail out of Bear Stearns? If we can start a war on the word of the President, I think we can make adjustments in fuel prices without socialism taking over the nation. We do lease to oil companies. Would it be out of line to suggest the billions they make might be a little over the top while we're at war & fuel is driving US into a recession? We lowerd the speed limit to 55 MPH a few years ago but that wouldn't be social.
Why is it every time a republican has a problem it turns into a socialist program or socialism & it's the fault of a democrat? Our schools are social with the word public in front of them, they're not social? Social Security is a social progam, Medicare, & Mediaid are social programs, taxes are social. It might be politically or according to republicans, incorrect to suggest public schools are social but anytime a government collects $ from taxpayers, many who don't go to the public school paid for with their tax $, it's social. Dance around it all you want with speacial words but it doesn't change the fact that $ is collected from US taxpayers to run a school owned by city, county, state, or federal government. It may be worded as something other than social, called public, but it is social.
Tell me Social Security isn't a social program. Social Security would be in great shape if Congress, our representatives weren't stealing from it. I guess that shoots your anti social theories down. Social worked fine until your perfect world of government realized the money could be had. Can't cap fuel prices but had no problem skimming off Social Security after failing to run the country on regular social taxes?
Republicans, know all, never wrong about anything, never accept responsibility, & it's a perfect world, it's the truth as long as it's republican. The Nazi party & the republican party have more in common than you would like to admit or would admit. You should change the name to the denial party, it's about the only thing repubicans do well or should I say best. The screwup&denial party, it's got something, a certain ring to it, truth? Truth & republican don't fit together in the same sentence.
Screwup&denial Party. Isn't that the party Larry Craig is in, resigned from but never left? Has ring to it. You guys are entertaining.
Same message
Mr. Bush will be out of office January 20th (I think that's the date). I'll look forward to a smile on your face and a bounce in your step.
I'll keep the smile and bounce I already have regardless of who wins the election. Life in the U.S. is too good to allow the occasional setback to be discouraging.
I truly wish it were better for you.
(I hope I got the reply thing right for UdP)
Bush will be gone, good news!
Bad news, we'll be paying for his mistakes for years & may never recover. Who loses along the way as you bounce around through life not realizing the realities & mistakes that could have been prevented while 20 year old kids sacrifice life for all the wrong reasons.
I could live a fairy tale life like you do but I face reality & kick it in the teeth when it's as obvious as a fool in office. You went through Vietnam, then life thinking you were fighting communism, didn't know until a couple weeks ago we were financing it though weapons sales from communist countries, weapons used to kill 58K Americans. I imagine you'll be long gone before the failures of this administration come to light. I tried to let you know so you wouldn't spend the rest of your life as wrong as you did the first 60 years but I guess you'd rather live in denial, republican qualities burn soul deep I guess. Can't teach an old dog new tricks?
Bounce, I think that would be a good blog name for you. mtomlin doesn't have much going on in the 21st century blog world, Try Bounce, it's fitting with you're happy go lucky fairy tale life style. See, I'm happy, happy to help anyone & everyone. I gave you a catchy name for the blog, you just don't appreciate anything. Bounce, bounce, bounce, bounce, bounce, & you could have been a basketball in a championship game but no, you settled for republican.
You make my day, first thing every morning I look forward to the bounce, the happy go lucky life & fairy tale blog post by bounce. Like The Wizard of OZ, unrealistic but definately entertaining. Too much lds in the seventies? Even if you don't use bounce I would have to suggest everyone else refer to you as bounce so you don't go through blog life with that boring old mtomlin thing you have going on. You might want to change that for the national column as well, spice it up. Who knows, you could right a book & become famous Bounce Amos while letting the world know reality isn't reality at all, just a crosseyed view of a world unwilling to accept reality. You really could write some good fiction with that republican background. Keep on keeping on old bounce, I think you have yourself & whoever is willing to read it, fooled.
If you make serious money on the new bounce fiction books am I going to get any bank? Didn't think so, & after all the support & bounce name to boot. Here I got you started in bounce fiction books & no appreciation? You could be the equivalent to that Bubba Gump shrimp thing in Forrest Gump. Wonder where Harry Potter got started? Use that imagination bounce, take the fairy tale to another level.
See, I'm not just a bump on a log complaining about everything, I have some jokes they would kick me off the blog for, should I share. Did you hear the one? Don't put so much stock in the things people write or post, you might be surprised in the reality of who they are, if you can get past that republican hang up.
Good humor
I do appreciate that.
You are right about paying for mistakes over long periods of time. With the exception of China, our biggest international problems are due to the failed policies and Presidency of Jimmy Carter - and of course all subsequent presidents who failed to address and right the issues.
I really don't live in a fairy tale world. I know wars are ugly and sometimes the ugliest parts are the "industries" that surround and support them. Viet Nam was a noble cause that was badly done. Many died unnecessarily - I've been to The Wall memorial and seen the names I knew. I could be angry today and call them wasted lives - or I can accept the imperfection of a world run by mortals and revere the sacrifices made in the intent to do good. I choose the latter.
Don't understand your thoughts about my religion...I was never LDS in the seventies, and am not LDS now. You might need to explain that one.
I tried fiction writing, once, with no success. I do a lot better sticking with the truth, and opinion. I like mine the most. That probably doesn't surprise you. So my current book - hopefully due out in the fall (my 3rd) won't be fiction - it will dish the dead solid perfect truth. In other words a book about my opinions. Maybe they'll have George Clooney play me in the movie (laugh).
Yesterday President Bush was getting ready to meet with some reporters when an aide ran up to him and whispered "Mr. President you need to know that 3 Brazilian soldiers were just killed in Iraq." The President turned pale, looked at his aide and said "remind me how many are a brazillion?"
There's your joke for the day. Smiles. Worry, but be happy.
Bounce buddy, you're way straight. You're suit could stand on it
lds in the seventies was line from a Star Trek movie. "Too much LSD in the seventies." Having lived in the sixties & been to Vietnam I have to believe you were exposed to more than just the war & republican nonsense.
Seriously, loosen up. It isn't me that's uptight about things, I just like to kick the crooks. Let me help you out, you'll never sell books with that stiff upper lip thing going on. Change the name, Bounce, like Snoop Dog it will attrack the babes. First thing you know they'll be 50 year olds, 40, & swingers. They'll be all about Bounce & his cool tool. Next thing ya know you'll be on My Space, friends flashing you with all their youth. Don't get arrested for child porn.
Next year when spring break happens, college girls go to the beach, & we're all watching girls gone wild, there you'll be. You lucky devil. I friend of mine goes do to the Ozarks every year & the girls gone wild people are all over the place. Toppless dancing, boat races, beer, bong, & all the terrible things that are destroying America. Clears the arteries, bypass the bypass.
I see a future for you in rap maybe, dress down a little, & shed that republican reputation. See what a name can do. Bounce is really starting to look good on you man.
Even Bush has the humor going on, too bad it always comes back to money. I'll bet he was a party dog in college, had a brazillion or two at spring break. Let's see the video.
LDS
Oh, oh, you meant lsd - your first message said lds. I've seen both in the army.
Nope, no lsd back then, or much of anything other than pbr - that's beer, no inference to professional bull riders intended...
Now I get it - I've heard of Snoop Dog - I just don't watch much pro wrestling - but that caused me to think of what you mean by Bounce. She's a singer, really pretty, dark skin.
Now that I know who you mean I'll re-read your message and try to figure it out.
I wrote lds because that is what was said
in Star Trek, Capt Kurt said Spock did too much LDS in the seventies but it should have been LSD. I think it had something to do with the ears or the way they were dressed. You're killing me here. I can't recall all that stuff, might have it all wrong.
I don't think her name is Bounce, isn't it Beyonce or something? Bounce man, bounce through life, a lighter step as you pointed out in the earlier post. You have to go with it, perfect name for a 21st century author. Start a new trend, like rap except literature. Bounce literature, I think you're onto something.
Where'd that pro wrestling come from, Playboy? There was a little girl wrestler in last month's Playboy I think. You can't fool US any longer, you're all about the funky stuff & just acting like a conservative republican. Hanging around with good looking singers & wrestlers, sly dog. Bounce, we had a dog named Bouncer when were were little kids, kinda forgot until we've kicked up some stones here. Dog used to bounce through the weeds after rabbits so we named him Bouncer. You could work in a bar with a $25 handle like that.
Like I said, shed the republican reputation. Bounce out of the 20th century into the 21st while you're only eight years behind & you're on easy street. You'll be hanging with Snoop Dog before we know it. I bet you forget about all us after you hit the big time. See how ungratefull you are, I give you a great name that leads to stardom & you already forgot about me. You were going to kick my but a week ago & all the sudden fame has clouded your vision & memory to the point I'm nobody. Some friend you turned out to be. You'll be higher than a Georgia pine hanging with the Snoop Dog & I'll be pickin chit with the chickens here in Boise.
U got it GG
I offered to buy pizza but now I'm off to the bright lights and big money. Stay nice and I'll invite you to the Broadway or Hollywood opening. Maybe I'll introduce you to Lucy Lawless.
I missed the Star Trek joke - good one whichever way it went. But I think Snoopy is just a cartoon dog. I don't think there really was one, like Lassie or Rin Tin Tin... And even though we say Smokey Bear, we generally don't say Snoopy Dog.
Oh, I need to get more bounce, not more Beyonce...what kind of advice is that?
Beyonce with a carat on the E...
But she sang Bounce and proved she could (slightly ridiculous).
