Will bitter wolf hunters turn to religion or guns?

Only in the highly charged, polarized world of wolf politics is the killing of a few animals major news. I’m not challenging the news judgment. Even if 12 environmental groups were not seeking to reverse the wolf delisting, the killing of 37 wolves in a month would capture our attention. A few years ago the killing of several dozen sheep by wolves made the front page. But I’ve said for years wolf recovery will be complete when the killing of a few wolves is not news and the killing of a few cattle is not news.

In the current world, the killing of a few elk by wolves is news even though hunters kill thousands annually. Think about this fall when, if a judge doesn’t stop the state, Idaho opens its first wolf hunting season. You can bet the networks will be on the scene and the talking heads may turn away from the campaign long enough to argue about the lunacy of the scene, depending on what side they choose to take.

If the environmental groups are successful and the hunting season is stopped I predict more illegal wolf killings by hunters. The environmental groups will hold these poachers up as proof they were right to place wolves back on the list as if the federal government will have more success stopping poaching than the states. The Idaho Statesman ran a story a decade ago that said 50 percent of all poaching goes unpunished.

Idahoans, bitter about the decision, may not turn to religion but they may turn to their guns, to paraphrase Barack Obama. The decision by a prosecutor in Fremont County not to follow the recommendation of the Idaho Department of Fish and Game, to bring charges against a rancher who went after a wolf on his snowmobile and killed it, may have the same kind of effect. Some people will give themselves permission to push or break the law and kill wolves.

The public relations game right now is to show dirty pictures of dead wolves and dead elk. Both sides have are appealing to people’s base instincts. Prepare yourself: Here are dead wolves at Ralph Maughan’s site . And here are dead elk at the site of Tony Mayer , who is seeking an initiative to take away the state’s power to manage wolves. Ironically, the initiative would do the same thing the environmental suit would do, turn management back to the federal government. Mayer hopes it can trigger a crisis he thinks will give hunters political traction.

Barker is L A M E

I use the wolf link and see dead wolves. Ok.

I use the elk link and see a nice live bull in a meadow. A person has to realize the dead elk photos are in the "slide show". Thanks for the info.

"I predict more illegal wolf killings by hunters."
More?? Your article lacks disclosure of ANY 'illegal' killings.

*******

And your headline is lame too. The hunters are not bitter at this point. The events have run their course and management is in the works. It's the wolf-lovers who are bitter. And they are bitter because what they want is finally here, but they weren't prepared and didn't think the result of achieving their goal.

Rocky you are so bias, you stink even though this cable connection.

good point

Two wolves were poached since they were delisted, Fish and Game reports.

Keep up the fan mail

Dear Rocky

If you are referring to the two near Ashton (I don't know since your writing is so vague and L A M E)-- One was killed within the law and the second is under questionable terms. And at least questionable enough for the PA not to press charges.

Have you heard of innocent until proven guilty? They were not poached.

Unless you are really a judge and moonlighting as a bad journalist, you are totally off base.

In any case, You're Fired!

I'll stop reading your stuff again.
Love Your #2 Fan.

What does that have to do with delisting>>>?

Rocky,

There have been illegal wolf kills and goverment wolf "culling" since wolves were introduced in '95...
Why would hunters be bitter>>?......Its the wolf advocates that are bitter that wolves are now being managed and
will be hunted after their lawsuits fail....328 wolves need to be killed in 2008......Hunters I have talked to are definitely not BITTER about this....If you think wolf lovers aren't bitter spend a couple minutes on Ralph Maughan's site....You could spend hours reading endless advocate threads whining about the FEW wolves that have been "slaughtered" since delisting....

BTW...what is the main point of your blog....I'm missing something....

STEW!

It's a blog

Rocky's posts here are a BLOG, not classical reporting where the entire story is laid out....you can read lots of his great stuff by searching the Statesman archives. Nobody is going to hand you information, on a silver platter, just because you clicked one link. ,t Blogs are a relatively new phenomenon in the news businesss and people are trying to figure out exactly how to use them. Rocky is one of the most experienced outdoor writers in the country and deserves respect. NO, I DO NOT WORK FOR THE STATESMAN, and Rocky doesn't know me.

Everybody should remember their manners.

We have bad manners and remember them at all times!

However, I gather you've never met Udapimp before...

Who needs wolves when you have cold 'stones?

"Turn" to religion and guns?

All the wolf hunters I know are already waist deep in both.

More STEW!

Yummy.

Forget your wilderness experience

It appears that the extremist pro-wolf crowd will be successful in getting their injunction and forcing wolves to be reinstated as endangered. This is a huge disappointment for Idaho outdoor enthusiasts whether you are a hunter or simply enjoy camping in the wilderness. The environmentalist extremists are insisting that a 5000 minimum wolf population needs to exist in the 3 state area of Idaho, Montana and Wyoming. We can kiss our hunting and recreational opportunities goodbye as the wolves will now be king of the wilderness.
