Blogging the NFL Draft: Playing the mock game; Tadman wants chance

2:10 p.m. -- Boise State safety Marty Tadman said he has been contacted by about eight teams personally and the rest have spoken with his agent. Tadman said about 13-14 teams are realistically interested, seven or eight are very interested and two or three have shown him a lot of love before the draft.

"It's still up in the air if I get drafted or not, but I'm 100 percent sure I'll be in camp by Sunday night," Tadman said this week. "I don't have to worry about getting a chance."

Tadman said he would like to get drafted (of course), but if he has to sign as an undrafted free agent, he will get to pick his team and situation. Tadman compared himself to Chris Carr, another former Boise State defensive back.

"He found a way in," Tadman said.

2:00 p.m. -- Consider this:

Last year's No. 5 pick — OT Levi Brown — got a 6-year, $62-million contract with $18.1 million in guarantees.

Last year's No. 17 pick — DE Jarvis Moss — got a 5-year, $15.0-million contract with $8 million in guarantees.

Then think of how painful it will be to watch this draft for Ryan Clady and his family.

1:47 p.m. -- In the latest issue of Sports Illustrated, former Boise State left tackle Ryan Clady goes No. 5 to the Chiefs. That is the highest the mock drafts have him going.

USA Today polled eight writers for its mock draft. Three have Clady going to the Chiefs at No. 5.

Two have him going to the New England Patriots at No. 7 — that would be great for Clady in my opinion.

Two have him going to the Broncos at No. 12.

And one has him going to the Panthers at No. 13.

Here's the link.

Mel Kiper has him being picked by the Chiefs at No. 17.

1:44 p.m. -- The NFL Draft is only 24 hours away and the mock drafts are coming fast and furious.

In Mel Kiper's latest on ESPN.com, he projects Ryan Clady to fall to No. 17 and the Kansas City Chiefs. That is a dream scenario for the Chiefs — and I'm not sure he will last that long.

4:25 p.m. -- Mark Kiszla of the Denver Post thinks the Broncos should pick a running back in the first round. Most mock drafts have the Broncos taking an offensive lineman.

Or the Broncos could trade down.

4:18 p.m. -- Sorry for the lack of updates today. Been doing some research on other Boise State draftees for a story in Friday's editions of the Idaho Statesman.

Colleague Chadd Cripe caught up with former Boise State QB Taylor Tharp today. Tharp is still hoping to catch on with a team as an undrafted free agent.

Tharp said he has been working out, playing some golf and visiting his brother at UCLA.

"It's a long couple months to see what your future holds for you," Tharp said. "I'm just trying to be as ready as I can for any mini-camp tryout or any deal."

3:12 p.m. -- Spoke with Ryan Clady on Tuesday for a big feature that will appear in Thursday's editions of the Idaho Statesman.

Among the highlights:

— On the Dolphins' signing Michigan OT Jake Long: "The faster he got off the board, the faster me and the rest of the tackles get drafted. There are so many teams that need tackles that that's good."

— On his visits to various NFL teams: "Facility-wise, Detroit had some really nice facilities and also Baltimore. I saw the plans for the Jets' new facilities."

— On remaining in Los Angeles for the draft: "I don't even know if I got invited (to New York City). I made the decision based off wanting to be out here in California."

In the latest mock draft on ESPN.com, Todd McShay projects the Chicago Bears to select Clady at No. 14. Bears coach Lovie Smith came to Boise to work out Clady.

McShay has Orlando Scandrick being selected late in the fifth round.

12:06 p.m. -- How does Kansas City's trade of Jared Allen and the Dolphins' signing of Jake Long affect Ryan Clady?

Here's a story from Kansas City about the impact of Long on the Chiefs' decision at No. 5. Kansas City has two first-round picks now, No. 5 and No. 17, and big needs along the offensive and defensive lines.

In addition, the Chiefs have the No. 35, No. 66, No. 73 and No. 82 picks — so they will be among the most important players in this year's draft.

Could they package one of the third-round selections along with No. 17 to move up and grab Clady? It looks like Kansas City is thinking defensive line at No. 5.

Jared Allen, a former Idaho State standout, will be missed in Kansas City.

11:40 a.m. -- At least one mock draft has the Denver Broncos taking a Boise State offensive lineman. Just not the one you're thinking of.

The Sporting News projects that former Boise State lineman Dan Gore could go to the NFL Broncos in the sixth round.

Gore was a defensive tackle in 2004 and 2005 before moving to the offensive line. He started at right tackle — on the opposite side as projected first-round pick Ryan Clady — in 2007. At 6-foot-5 and 296 pounds (listed in the 2007 media guide), Gore certainly has good size for the NFL.

12:10 p.m. -- Clady will be in Los Angeles for the draft. He will not travel to New York City.

11:59 a.m. -- Spoke with Pat Dye Jr., Ryan Clady's agent, earlier this morning.

Dye and family sources told me that Clady has visited with Atlanta (No. 3), Kansas City (No. 5), Baltimore (No. 8), Denver (No. 12), Carolina (No. 13), Chicago (No. 14), Detroit (No. 15), Houston (No. 18) and Philadelphia (No. 19).

"I think his window opens at 5 with Kansas City, then certainly Baltimore is a possibility," Dye said. "If he's available at 12 when Denver picks, I'd be very surprised if they didn't take him."

ESPN is reporting that Michigan OT Jake Long has agreed to terms with the Dolphins and will be the No. 1 pick.

Will Clady be the second OT off the board?

8:47 a.m. -- The Turf loves the NFL Draft. Not sure why, but the television coverage has a way of luring us in for hours.

Like a “Real World” marathon, there is always more intrigue — another pick, another trade, another Mel Kiper, Jr. rant.

And I’m not the only one.

So the blog is going all NFL Draft, all the time this week. Basically that means a host of links, some insight and hopefully some reaction from local prospects, notably Boise State’s Ryan Clady (projected first- rounder) and Orlando Scandrick (potential second-rounder).

Check for updates throughout the day. I’ll try to post several batches of links each day.

• DOLPHINS: Negotiating with Michigan OT Jake Long to be the No. 1 pick.

• FALCONS: Could they trade the No. 3 pick?

• RAIDERS: Looking at Arkansas RB Darren McFadden or Virginia DE Chris Long with No. 4.

• PATRIOTS: Might be tempted to look at offensive linemen with the No. 7 pick. It doesn’t sound like Clady is one of the Pats’ targets, however.

Hey Murph?

Is Clady going to be in New York for the draft?

Clady will not be in New York

Clady decided to spend draft day in Los Angeles with family and friends. He will not go to New York City for the draft.

A suggestion

The NFL draft has a way of luring you for hours, and you live in Idaho?
Try getting into the outdoors on Saturday afternoon- hike, bike, ski Brundage, turkey hunt, golf, ...
You may be amazed to find that you can live a little and catch the news on Sunday.

Please

Please do not refer to yourself as the turf. It sounds kind of dorky. How about "The turd"? (just kidding)

It's HIS TURF, not his name...

and you sound like you have worse social skillz than I do.

Chiefs move up

I hope the Chiefs move up to get Clady, then use there 66 or 73 pick to get Scandrick.

Murph's Turf....

Most of us with a brain can tell it's a play on the highly used nickname for the Blue. Smurf Turf. I think it's kinda cool myself.

Ain't that kid smart enough to find an agent that will get...

him a job already?

Like the Miami player?

So...

You obviously read only headlines and don't pay much attention to anything else.

No other team can negotiate with any other player until after that player is drafted on draft day, per the NFL office.

My guess is both Clady and his representative have much more in their smarts cabinet than you could imagine. I am positive they have more smarts than you at this point.

Cartman says,

You didn't even read the feature story!

RE: Miami and some sicko named Long. Who is THAT creep anyway?
