KTVB changes announcers -- on a Saturday morning?
Submitted by Brian Murphy on Mon, 04/14/2008 - 10:04am.
I am not much of a conspiracy theorist. I believe we really did land on the moon and, while Oswald might not have acted alone, the FBI wasn't involved in the Kennedy assassination.
Why am I telling you this?
Because I think there's some "conspiracy" type motives behind KTVB's decision to change play-by-play announcers on Boise State football games this fall.
In case you missed the news — and it was KTVB's hope that you did — sports director David Augusto is out as the play-by-play voice of the Broncos on television. Augusto is headed to the sidelines to report. News anchor Mark Johnson is in.
Was it a good move? I'll get to that shortly.
More interesting to me was the timing of the announcement. The station sent out the news in the form of a press release at 7:57 a.m. on Saturday. Huh?
If you want people to hear news, you don't release it at 7:57 a.m. on a Saturday. When Hilary Clinton released her tax returns, she did it late on a Friday afternoon. She didn't want it to become a major story. Nor did KTVB, which was demoting its sports director.
Still more interesting was the overall timing — coming little more than a week after Boise State opted to switch its radio broadcasts from KBOI to KIDO.
Despite whispers that some at Boise State were not happy with KBOI's lead announcer, Paul J. Schneider, the station presented a bid with Paul J. as the lead announcer. They lost the contract.
Don't think this fact wasn't noticed by KTVB. Augusto's performance on broadcasts draws at least as much criticism as Paul J.'s. If not, more.
With KTVB's contract set to expire in after the 2008-09 basketball season, this appears to me to be a preemptive move to remove one obstacle to keeping the lucrative rights.
Something tells me the Saturday announcement was not meant to be seen by anyone but the folks at Boise State.
• I think Johnson will do a fine job. He has plenty of sports experience — and other experience — and a comfort level that I think will serve him well in this capacity.
One bit of advice to Johnson and whoever gets the radio play-by-play job: Attend as many practices as Boise State will allow. Show up for interviews. Talk to assistant coaches.
You can't fake knowing the team during broadcasts. Fans, who are better informed than ever, realize it quickly.
We ARE writing in KTVB style, for the "critics"...

Augusto out, well yeah who in the hell made him announcer anyway, management should bear that burden, he sucked. Tom Scott is extremely annoying with senseless info and living in the past is nice for an old man but lets look forward.
KTVB needs to hire a real sports play by play announcer for BSU sports. Stop recycling old bad sports reporter guys just because they can, Johnson?, what a pant load.
Does BSU really see this guy as representing them not only locally, but regionally. The I am OK, your OK attitude at KTVB is to much to take. Turn down the sound and listen to the new radio broadcast.
But who's going to be the new radio guy or gal?

I agree with you, but with no radio team announced yet, we might have to watch the games on mute(radio and TV).
He's a sixtyish ex-AM DJ...and you expected?

Mark Johnson

Hey, Don't forget that, prior to anchoring, Johnson was KTVB's Sports Director.
I personally like David. He did a great job as a sports anouncer. Tom Scott has a bit of an attitude... but he has always had a bit of an attitude, even back in the KFXD days.
KTVB could always get Paul J to do the games. I understand he's available. Now wouldn't that be a killer deal. Most people turn down the TV and listen to Paul J anyway.
I am not sure falling back on Mark is the best idea. I am sure Mark wants a life too. He can't be news anchor and sports director all at once.
BSU - Mr. B. and the crew LOVE Mark Johnson. They have been old buds for... for.... forever!
Hey, when you cut the crap towards Mr. Augusto, take a look at the other stations. Sports commentators - ha. KTVB has been the only station with a real sports department ever since Wayne Duzabak was dropped.
Oh... There's always Larry McNeilly!
(Sorry 'bout the spelling, guys... not intentional, ya know)
Good riddance

Yeah, I never did like Agusto. I can see, I guess, why people didn't like Paul J, with the little mistakes here and there, but you could tell he really loved the Broncos. I never got any of that with the TV coverage. Hopefully this change will be for the better, if not like the guy said Paul J is available.

Johnsons just fine, but..........
Unfortunately, Johnson is an news anchor for KTVB, which is going to limit the amount of time he can spend doing research on the Broncos and their opponents. I like Mark Johnson a lot, but I strongly disagree with this move. Johnson fits the bill as "the guy in the building who can do the job". Sounds to me like KTVB might be trying to cut financial corners with this move as well. On the bright side Augusto is out. I just wish KTVB could have looked outside of their own station to fill the spot.
