More on Paul J., Citadel vs. Peak, a closer look at the bids and the Spring Game

I wanted to expand on some topics that didn’t make it into my column on Paul J. Schneider this morning. I’ll be updating the blog throughout the day — leading up to the scrimmage — with information gathered about the Boise State radio contract. Boise State chose Peak Broadcasting of Boise’s (KIDO) bid over one from the Citadel Broadcasting Company (KBOI) last week.
The decision ends the Broncos’ 35-year affiliation with KBOI — and Paul J.’s tenure as the Broncos’ play-by-play announcer.
• Paul J. said he would call tonight’s scrimmage like he would any other scrimmage despite it (likely) being the final Bronco broadcast of his long career.
“I’ll probably call it pretty straight. I might reminisce a little bit,” he said.
The scrimmage format allows for lots of storytelling, so I’d imagine that Paul J. will wander from the “game” action quite often.
Paul. J. said he has been touched by all the phone calls, e-mails and other expressions of thanks that he has received from the community since the news broke last week.
“It has been really gratifying. It has made me feel real good,” he said. “I’ve gotten calls from people at Boise State. The football coaches have been extraordinary. It makes me feel that the work I’ve done has been appreciated by the general public, if not by Boise State.”
He said he felt that Boise State athletic director Gene Bleymaier wanted to make a change, but added that Bleymaier never confronted Paul J. about his work on the broadcasts. Paul J. said they had not spoken about his performance in 12 years.
“He never came to me. Never said, ‘I don’t like the way you’re doing this, the way you’re doing that,’ ” Schneider said.
Though Paul J. has been stung by the decision, he said he is OK with the idea of not calling games anymore, even if his family is not.
“My life is good and I’m fine with it. I wish the reasons had been better,” he said. “But I’m OK with not doing the games. I’m just OK with it.”
Paul J. said he doesn’t want to sound as if he is angry — and in talking with him I did not get that impression. I just think he would have liked to leave on a better note.
• Boise State coach Chris Petersen, who will be in the booth with Paul J. during the fourth quarter of today’s scrimmage, said he doesn’t think we’ve heard the last of the play-by-play announcer.
“Paul J., somehow, he’ll still be involved with the Broncos, somehow, some way. I don’t know how and when and where but he’ll be around. He may be leading the tailgate parties out there and having fun for the first time in his football career. I may look forward to joining him out there,” Petersen said.
Here’s some more from Petersen on Paul J.:
“He’s just a really solid person. He has so much history here. He knows so much more about the Broncos than 99 percent of the people — not just football, but all of the sports. Those are the two things that pop out — that he’s a solid, awesome person and he’s a Bronco. He is a Bronco.”
• I asked Bleymaier if Paul J. would be honored in any way by the school.
“Paul J has done a tremendous job over the years and we want to recognize him and thank him for that. We want to recognize him and thank him for what he’s done and what he’s meant to Boise State, “ Bleymaier said. “We plan on doing that.”
When I asked him for specifics — such as the Hall of Fame or an on-field ceremony — Bleymaier said they had not gotten that far.
“There’s a number of things that we can do and I’m sure will do,” he said.
My suggestion: Name the radio booth in the new press box for Paul J.
It’s unlikely, of course, since Peak bought the naming rights to the radio booth as part of its bid. The cost: $25,000, split in two payments over two years.
Maybe since Kevin Godwin, the senior vice president for Peak, used to be at Citadel and knows Paul J., he’ll do the right thing.
• In conversations with Paul J. and Citadel market manager Sandy Gamblin, both said that KBOI would attempt to become like ESPN in its heavy pre-game and post-game coverage. See if you follow: Though ESPN doesn’t have NFL games on Sundays, the network is still a go-to for NFL pre-game and post-game coverage on Sundays.
“We are not going to go away,” Paul J. said. “Like ESPN is during the National Football League with good pre-game shows, we’re going to be like that. Boise State will end up benefiting. (KIDO) better strap it on. We’re going to have great Bronco coverage. We’re going to work hard at it and they better work hard at it, too.”
Full disclosure: KBOI is considering using Idaho Statesman employees, including myself, during its pre-game and post-game shows. I did not learn this until yesterday, though it was part of KBOI’s meeting with Boise State.
Apparently, the committee, led by Bleymaier, did not exactly warm up to the idea of the Statesman having a presence on Bronco broadcasts.
• The Idaho Statesman obtained documents relating to the process on Thursday after its open records request was filled by Boise State. Among the more interesting documents in the file was the “scorecard” used by the committee. Officially called the “Radio Rights RFP Evaluation Form,” it has grades for each of the four bids in seven categories.
In addition to Peak and Citadel, Impact Radio Group submitted two proposals. They scored 458 and 454 points, respectively. Peak won with 665 points. Citadel had 651.4 points.
Citadel won in the categories that related to history, taking 100 points in “experience in sports broadcasting,” “history of successful performance in the radio industry” and “financial stability of company.”
Peak won in the categories that related to the current bid, taking 100 points in “financial terms and benefits as detailed in the individual proposals,” “other benefits” and “programming and creativity of proposal in support of BSU.”
No one was awarded 100 points in the “status and draw of sports commentators” category, though Peak — which has not named its broadcast team — received 98 points. Citadel, with Paul J. and Jeff Caves as its team, received 89 points.
The lowest score either bid received was an 80, for Citadel in the “programming and creativity of proposal in support of BSU” category. That 20-point difference made a huge difference.
Citadel did not seem to get much credit for things it has done in helping promote Bronco football.
According to the KBOI proposal, the company spent more than $35,000 to provide radio acts for the BSU Alumni homecoming party in downtown Boise.
The proposal said it would continue to host the “World’s Largest Tailgate Party,” in August, continue to broadcast the spring game and continue to have a live event for Signing Day on sister station KTIK.
The proposal talked about Bronco Notebooks each weekday on KBOI and a Final Four giveaway each year.
Peak representatives said “there would be weekly Boise State promotions on all (six) stations” during their meeting with Boise State. In their promotions answer in the bid, Peak does not mention anything other than radio spots, billboards and announcements. There is a proposal for “a giant one day blitz early in the year to promote Bronco Women’s Basketball” from Peak.
The proposal also mentions other BSU events that take place at Bronco Stadium or Taco Bell Arena, including the World’s Largest Tailgate Party and scrimmages.
The grading is very subjective in a few of these categories, to say the least.
In its “Letter of Justification,” Boise State said that “Peak’s interview presentation demonstrated a true enthusiasm for having these broadcast rights, and the willingness to create a mutual partnership that would put Boise State in the highest regard.”
One of the most specific reasons listed in the letter is that Peak provides “in-game radio presence for Bronco Major Corporate Partners that has been lacking to this point as an external media benefit.”
• According to Boise State’s “Intent to Award a Contract” that it issued on April 3, the deal is contingent upon Peak “finalizing the regional Bronco Radio Network” by May 15.
During the March 7 meeting between representatives of Peak and Boise State, Peak said it was “98 percent confident, especially in the Idaho markets” that it could secure a network. Peak said it had “secured nine stations in seven markets” to carry Boise State football.
Peak also said “setting up the network would be a challenge, but (it was) very confident we can make it happen.”
Peak said the network could “possibly” be for basketball, too.

Gene's behavior is
consistent from year to year: he is not a "people person." But he has done an incredible job as AD despite this (or maybe, in part, because of this). He's cool and aloof and doesn't really care too much about feelings in a business setting.
He doesn't seem to care that he is not well-liked or popular.
So Murph, how do you think this will evolve over the next two years? Think BSU will take it in-house in 2010?
Gene is a LAME DUCK (er Bruin)
Maybe Gene has alzhiemers and cant remember or realize whats going on. Boise State its time to take out the garbage and FIRE GENE BLEYMAIER. I am a alum and have been going to BSU games since the 70's. I have always diskliked Gene and felt he thought he was better than EVERYONE. Gene, your poor handling of this may be your demise. Its time for you to exit BSU!! You suck & I'm pissed off!
Fire Blaymeier
He's an arrognant jerk!
Amen!
Put Boise State back in the Big Sky. Better yet can the four year programs and go back to being a junior college. But why stop there? Lets knock down Taco Bell Arena, the football staduim and indoor practice facilicty and turn them into an air strip. Yes dump Blaymeir and take a giant leap backwords. And Bronco Nation wonders why they don't get any respect.
whatever
vandal jackrass
This is all so BIZARRE
The more we learn, the more bizarre this is. How can this be justified, awarding a contract on future promises of "finding sports commmentators" and KIDO having "confidenece in securing stations sometime in the future" to try to compensate for their weak signal?
And WHAT is that about PEAK Broadcasting now having the rights to name the Press Box that Paul J helped BSU achieve? Unbelievable!
WHAT is going on here?
Paul must stay.
Gene must go.

I, for one, will also be sending a letter to the State Board of Educuaton, encouraging them to overturn this bizarre contract with KIDO.
Whoa
PJ helped build the new press box.. Hmm I didn't realize he was on the Fiesta Bowl team's roster...
This is ridiculous, move on, change is good. He was gonna have to retire sometime.
Paul J
My thought on the firing or the awarding of the contract to a competitor is that is not just Paul J. Football is firing on all cylinders at BSU. Basketball can't get a decent crowd. Paul's football sidekick Jeff Caves constantly puts down BSU basketball on his radio show. A neutral attitude would be fine towards hoops, a negative one hurts the program and keeps fans out of the seats costing BSU money.
Come on Caves you are always saying you know business. Well when your part of the team, you don't bash the hand that feeds you. BSU is or was your boss. I imagine that it was eating at Gene for years and this is his was of handling the situation?
Bronco Basketball
So Caves should lie?
No
He should shut up. Being a student that goes and represents no matter the opponent (La Tech) I don't rip on our team though they were not close to perfect this year or previously. Gotta give Gene benefit of the doubt and hope he really does know what he's doing. Looks like he did, WAC CHAMPS BABY
Favorite Paul J. Moments...
I liked the time Paul J. started to describe a play that was going on, and as the play progressed, he started to yell, "OH! OH! YES! YES! GO! YES! WHAT?! NO! YOU GOTTA BE KIDDING ME!? THAT MAKES NO SENSE! AW, COME ON! RIDICULOUS!!" "So it's 1st and 15, Boise State."
Oops, my mistake, that's every game.
Why do
all of you keep making this personal, Gene did not "fire" Paul J. DID. NOT. HAPPEN. Bids were submitted for a contract, KBOI lost, simple as that.
Exactly
Citadel knew that Peak was going to come hard for the contract. Citadel could have made the University an offer they could not refues but chose not to. Upset fans shoud boycott KBOI.
The real reason
So numb nuts Murphy let's us in on the fact that he, and probably prater, will have a presence on the broadcasts? No wonder they lost the contract! Murphy is a massive tool and Prater beats his ex-wife and kids. Nice. Couldn't find two bigger losers to contribute?
Paul Schneider's time was up long ago.
Mr Negative
More name calling again, huh?
get these facts into the Paper, Murphy
Thank you for this article, but to get to the general readership, please get these facts and comments into the paper.
This even more clearly illustrates the stupidity of this decision from BSU (i.e., Gene). How can a decision like this be justified based on this sort of biased negotiation?
Keep digging, Murhpy. I'm sure there is still much more still waiting to come to light.
By the way, isn't BSU supported by public funding? The State Board of Eduction can still reject and reverse this hideous decision.
No, we really can't.
Please deal with it appropriately.
No we really can't ???
"we" the SBOE ?
Or the AMPAS, ASPCA, or an acronym TBA.
Don't question, rebut.
CAN YOU BELIEVE IT!!!
And it's all about the money..If BSU didn't get $200,000. or more from Peak it wasn't worth it. I don't know if Paul J had been considering retirement any time soon, but whenever he leaves I will miss his enthusiasm for the Broncos and his knowledge of BSU sports. Go Paul J!!!
Paul J.
The man did the best he knew how, but just like life people make desitions on what is best for the business or job at hand. I may not of always liked what Paul J. had to say but who cares. In 4 years we will be saying what happended to John Smith? This is all about nothing. What is important is what happens to the sports progams not who is doing the play by play
Paul J.
I understand KTVB is having problems with their play by play and color. Paul should siddle up to KTVB and be the play by play. Johnson could do color. After all, he is much more colorful than Paul.
All the best to Paul J. I have followed his sports commentary for over 30 years. Thanks for all the great calls you have made over the years. I will miss turning down the TV and turning up Paul.
BSU... I hate to see what's going to happen to you the first time you have a poor football season or two. You see what your fans do when the Basketball team looses a few games. Watch the BAA and the fans run when the Broncos fall. Where ya gonna get the money then?
Maybe then you will be able to walk thru a door without having to turn your head sideways.
