Oscar ceremony offered few surprises, but it had its moments
There weren’t too many surprises from this evening’s Oscar ceremony. Joel and Ethan Coen raked in awards for Best Director, Best Film and Best Adapted Screenplay for “No Country for Old Men” and the equally-bizarre-in-real-life Daniel Day-Lewis ran away with Best Actor as expected.
There were a few interesting awards handed out, however.
Marion Cotillard beat out Julie Christie for Best Actress. It was surprising because subtitled films haven’t always fared well with Academy Award voters. But really ... did anyone even see "Away From Her"?
Tilda Swinton won the least predictable Best Actress award, and with her surprisingly funny acceptance speech, proved she isn’t as icy as the character she played in the underrated “Michael Clayton.”
Diablo Cody received well-deserved recognition for Best Original Screenplay for “Juno.” I expected a more interesting acceptance speech from the tattooed hipster, though.
Since everything went pretty much as expected, the highlight for me was probably the award for Best Original Song. Viewers were forced to sit through live renditions of four terrible songs up for the award (three from the film "Enchanted") before Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova came on stage and performed “Falling Slowly” from the film “Once.”
Short of having Eddie Vedder perform “Hard Sun” from "Into the Wild” (which was absurdly overlooked by the Academy), the victory for Hansard and Irglova was the fist-pumper of the night. That Irglova was cut off by the music then allowed by host Jon Stewart to come back on and give an acceptance speech after commercial break made the moment that much more special.
And, it should be noted that a David Parker was part of a team that won Best Sound Mixing for their work on “Bourne Ultimatum.” I’d like to thank the Academy ...

Thanks for the synopsis...
Sounds like a small trainwreck.
How melodic.
I had a really bad back from overexertion and slept it off. Was it worth being up or disappointing?
